Governor Mike Dunleavy declares May 9-15 as Wildland Fire Prevention and Preparedness Week in Alaska With the winter snowpack melting away, days growing longer and temperatures heating up, wildland fire season in Alaska has arrived. To help raise awareness, Governor Mike Dunleavy has proclaimed May 9-15 as "Wildland Fire Prevention and Preparedness Week in Alaska." The governor joins fire managers from the Alaska Division of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service, and the U.S. Forest Service in urging Alaskans to take responsibility for protecting their homes and communities this summer by preventing human-caused wildfires and taking steps to fireproof their homes. "The boreal forest of Alaska is a wildfire-driven ecosystem, so it's not a matter of if there will be wildfires but when and where," said Governor Dunleavy. "As individuals and communities, we need to do our part to prevent human-caused wildfires and be vigilant to help preserve our homes, communities, infrastructure and natural resources." AK FIRE INFO Juneau program born from the pandemic is part of Capital City Fire Rescue budget A proposed addition to Capital City Fire Rescue's budget was a major topic of discussion with Fire Chief Rich Etheridge on Action Line. The chief said they've been able to maintain its budget thanks to federal relief dollars and haven't had to make any significant cuts. He describes it as pretty much a flat budget for next fiscal year with exception of additional spending for a mobile integrated health program. The chief said they will add a full-time and a part-time paramedic who will be charged at looking at the most frequent users of emergency services and try to find the root causes of why they're using these systems instead of alternative and more appropriate types of care. East Meadow fire latest of 5 reported in New York in past 24 hours A series of fast-moving fires have destroyed homes and stretched firefighters thin on Long Island Thursday night. A total of five fires have been reported in Nassau County in the past 24 hours, including the latest fire reported in East Meadow shortly before 8:30 p.m. Dramatic video showed a large flash, in what appeared to have been some kind of an explosion that started the fire. One person suffered minor burns to his hands. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Meanwhile, a second fire in Westbury was reported just before 6 p.m. Officers responded to the calls of a house fire on Rockland Street. Officials say all residents in the house had already evacuated. One woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. This comes after three other fires were reported in Nassau County, including another in Westbury that has impacted LIRR service, and one at a home in Garden City which claimed the lives of 3 residents. WABC-TV ABC 7 NEW YORK Related with Video: 2 East Meadow Homes Catch Fire After Propane Tank Explosion Vaccine Holdouts: How Some Departments Encourage First Responders to Get Vaccinated Though first responders risk their lives by fighting fires and crime every day, an investigation by the News4 I-Team found thousands of public safety personnel in the D.C. region may be risking their safety in another way: by declining to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The I-Team found not only are many police, fire and emergency response agencies grappling with how and whether to urge their members to get vaccinated; many are also operating with an incomplete picture of who has received the shot. The I-Team requested vaccination data from nearly two dozen police and fire departments in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. It found each is tracking the vaccination status of their force differently, if at all. Nearly half of 22 departments said they're not tracking vaccinations, with some citing privacy concerns and noting vaccines are voluntary. WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON DC West Virginia dive team member talks about finding alleged murder weapon in lake VIDEO: A possible murder weapon has been found at the bottom of a lake nearly a year after the killing. When Williamson firefighter Shane Runyon went through water rescue training, he never imagined he'd use those skills to help with a murder investigation. Williamson Police Department Chief Grady Dotson enlisted the Williamson Fire Department dive team's help after getting a tip that a hammer allegedly used to kill John Jackson in May of last year had been thrown into Laurel Lake. "We did some interrogations and interviews, and the tip came from one of them," Dotson said. James Church, Charles Jarvis, and Terry Jarvis had already been indicted in the case, accused of killing Jackson and burning down the apartment where the crime allegedly happened on Elm Street. The suspects are awaiting trial. "We're very familiar with the lake," Runyon said. "We spend a lot of time diving there, training there." WSAZ-TV NBC 3 HUNTINGTON How a 10 cent wrist band is making North Carolina firefighters more aware of their cancer risk A 10-cent wrist band could help researchers give North Carolina firefighters greater insight into their risks of cancer. Occupational Health and Safety data reveals firefighters are nine percent more likely to get cancer than the general population. Why is part of a study between the Duke Cancer Institute, Duke University, and North Carolina firefighters. As part of News 13's Deadlier than Fire series and documentary, News 13's got a look at the groundbreaking work and why it could have a national impact. "A lot of time firefighters are naturally inquisitive to where they want to get to the deeper answer," explained Durham Firefighter Corey Miller. Miller's curiosity sparked a letter several years ago. "And that partnership has been growing ever since," said Miller. That curiosity has blossomed into a joint effort between Duke University researchers, Duke Cancer Institute, and Durham fire station four, just six miles apart, now collaborating for the first time. WLOS-TV ABC 13 ASHEVILLE Fallen Heroes Day honors members of Maryland's public safety community who died in the line of duty Friday is the 36th annual Fallen Heroes Day. It's a day which honors police officers, firefighters, and other emergency personnel who died in the line of duty. The annual event is the only statewide ceremony in the nation that brings together all segments of the public safety community. The Fallen Heroes Day ceremony is usually open to the public. Because of the pandemic, only family members of those killed in the line of duty will be allowed to attend in person this year. This year's ceremony will be livestreamed on the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens Facebook page at 1pm. Fallen Heroes Day is held each year on the first Friday in May. Including this year's observance, 191 Maryland first responders have been honored to date. Recently, the Delmar Police department lost Corporal Keith Heacook on April 28, 2021. He died three days after being attacked while responding to a call on April 25, 2021. WMAR-TV ABC 2 BALTIMORE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
