| Protecting Firefighters with an Innovative Decontamination Process Author: Chief Mike Duyck (Ret.), Vice President, Emergency Technical Decon Firefighters encounter multiple carcinogens, frequently at dangerous levels, and the danger doesn’t end when the job is done. Residue left on firefighter’s gear can potentially cause a range of long-term deleterious health conditions. Toxic molecules can accumulate after multiple incomplete cleaning attempts, building up over time. Our innovative approach not only extends the life of the gear, it can significantly decrease the chances of future health problems for your firefighting professionals. read more |

Three Skagway residents die within a 12-hour period Dec. 8 was a tragic day for a town already struggling with a pandemic, an economic downturn and a natural disaster. Three residents, not connected to each other, died within a 12-hour period, all apparently from natural causes. According to Skagway Fire Chief Joe Rau, his staff received a report of a non-responsive female at 8:06 a.m. Around 8:30 a.m., Fire Chaplain Cindy Rau was called to assist the deceased's family members. A second call came at 1:12 p.m. This time the victim was an unresponsive male found by an IGA employee. Rau estimates the male had been dead "no more than a day." A third call came at 4:42 p.m., an unresponsive female. ‘We're approaching Christmas, it's just heartbreaking for families," Rau said. All three deaths are still under investigation but "appear to have died from natural causes," Rau said. In total, the fire department has four responders with some additional volunteers. "They really stepped up to the pressure and stress of yesterday. I'm very proud of them," Rau said. SKAGWAY NEWS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Man catches victims jumping from burning Georgia apartment VIDEO: As others were desperately trying to get to safety, a local man is being honored for taking action to make sure they could on Friday. And his actions may be why a bad situation didn't become much worse. Officials said William Cox was among the first on the scene when a fire broke out at Fairington Village Apartments in Stonecrest on Friday afternoon. He arrived and said he was immediately concerned when he didn't see people evacuating. "I walked down and I don't see anyone running out of the building," he said. "So, I'm screaming, 'Please, the building is on fire. If you're in there, get out'." Suddenly, the very people that were heeding his call were presented with a serious problem - flames had already overtaken the breezeways meaning their main exits were blocked. "And they just started throwing me their children," he said. WXIA-TV NBC 11 ATLANTA ‘The First Five': DC Emergency Responders Will Receive COVID-19 Vaccine Five emergency responders will be the first members of the D.C. Fire and EMS Department to get the COVID-19 vaccine this coming week, a sign that "the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter," Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a news release. The group, designated "The First Five," are FEMS Chief John Donnelly, the department's Medical Director Dr. Robert Holman, Lieutenants Joseph Papariello and Keishea Jackson, and firefighter/EMT Julio Quinteros. All are D.C. residents. Some of the First Five expressed their desire to get vaccinated for their family members and "brothers and sisters in the firehouse" and encouraged widespread vaccination, according to the release. "My father is everything to me; he's my world. And if I don't get it for any other reason, I have to get it for my daddy. I have to make sure he's safe," Jackson said. WRC-TV NBC 4 WASHINGTON DC New program in Colorado to offer early cancer screening for firefighters The team behind a new wellness program created specifically for firefighters said they hope early cancer screening will help save lives. The Medical Center of Aurora and Potomac Primary Care are launching the new effort called the Firefighter Wellness and Cancer Screening Program. "They support and protect our Colorado communities and now it's time for us to protect them," said Amie Shae, the oncology program manager at The Medical Center of Aurora and part of the team that created the new program. "This program really is comprehensive," she said. "The entry point is through a primary care, which will do annual physicals and labs for firefighters. And from there will do cancer screenings and cardiac screenings." Shea said the program is designed for regular follow ups so firefighters don't "fall through the cracks." And if doctors spot a problem, then the firefighter is referred to a specialist through the program. KUSA-TV NBC 9 DENVER Creeping Coyote Surprises Firefighters at Florida Station PHOTOS: A group of Fort Lauderdale firefighters had quite the surprise when a coyote wandered into their fire station Sunday morning. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue tweeted a photo of a coyote creeping in front of a fire truck parked inside their bay. "Not sure who was startled more as they ran in opposite directions," the department quipped in a tweet. Firehouse 29 is located in a "dense urban neighborhood about a mile from the beach," the department said. Coyote sightings have been recorded in all of Florida's 67 counties, and are said to live in the state's urban, suburban and rural landscapes, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The FWC says that coyotes are curious but timid creature and will generally flee if challenged by loud noises or aggressive actions. WTVJ-TV NBC 6 MIAMI Michigan firefighters celebrate baby boom PHOTOS: Water is essential when it comes to fighting fires, but there must be something special in the water in Grand Blanc Township. Their firefighting family just got a whole lot bigger. Seven of the 39 firefighters in the department became dads this year. The adorable babies joined their firefighting fathers for a photo on Sunday. The department wanted to celebrate an unexpected bright spot during a tough year. "So it's just kind of a coincidence that we all became pregnant at the same time," said Fire Marshal Chris Keller. "We thought it would be cool to get a group shot with everybody. 2020 has been a pretty rough year for everybody. So it's kind of a fun time to get together and bring some joy to each other." The Grand Blanc Township Fire Department added four bouncing baby boys and three beautiful baby girls to their firefighting crew in 2020. Congratulations to all the moms and dads.
