Nearly 5000 Lightning Strikes Statewide this Weekend Thunderstorms moved across south-central and southwest Alaska yesterday and today with 1,754 strikes Saturday June 4th, and 3,009 strikes Sunday June 5th. Some of these ignited wildfires that have been detected and staffed by firefighters. In anticipation of lightning, the Alaska Department of Forestry prepositions additional resources in areas that are forecasted to receive lightning. These resources increase the number of available firefighters that are poised to respond to any new fire start. A smokejumper airplane (Casa 212) with eight smokejumpers was temporarily positioned at the Palmer Airport today. The DOF helicopters are also here for initial attack, water drops and logistical support. Southwest Alaska was hit heavily with lightning strikes the last two days, and several new wildfires and smoke reports have been reported. ALASKA WILDLAND FIRE INFORMATION Scars left by arsonist ignite plans for new volunteer fire department in Two Rivers Amanda Smith cringed every time her phone rang last summer. Smith, a 43-year-old Two Rivers resident, was afraid it was one of her neighbors calling about yet another fire in the community of about 650 residents east of Fairbanks. Two Rivers was on edge as a young arsonist torched numerous buildings — some set ablaze with people still inside — over several months before authorities arrested him in August 2021. The unincorporated community located along Chena Hot Springs Road is at least a 40-minute drive from the nearest emergency services. Residents could do little but watch as flames consumed beloved buildings. But a new campaign rose out of the fear, frustration and helplessness of that time. A core group of Two Rivers residents is working to start a volunteer fire department. "It's about saving lives, protecting homes, protecting property and having the same service that everyone else in the borough has," Smith said. ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS - METERED SITE Contact Creek Fire now at 6,632 acres, hitting natural barriers The Contact Creek Fire (#151), which started 40 miles southeast of King Salmon, is now reported at 6,632 acres as of 1pm June 4th. The persistence of dry conditions and record heat on the Katmai peninsula has contributed to fire growth. Fire #151 is in a limited management area in Katmai National Park and Preserve, and officials from the National Park Service and Department of Forestry are continuing to actively monitor the fire's progress. Gathered from recent aerial observation, roughly 70% of the fire's perimeter is no longer growing due to creeks 6-10 feet wide creating a natural barrier. The entire north and northeast sides of the fire look to be held up on creeks of this size, and the sections of perimeter left burning are expected to run into similar streams that will halt growth within the next several days. Fire destroys multiple buildings at former cereal factory in Massachusetts Five buildings were destroyed during a fire at a former cereal factory in Orange Saturday. According to State Fire Marshal's Spokesperson Jake Wark, crews were called to 16 West River Street at around 11:45 a.m. Saturday for reported smoke and flames at the vacant mill building. Four additional buildings were also on fire, including one on East River Street. On March 29th the old cereal factory building was considered a danger due to structural concerns. The fire department closed a section of West River Street to vehicles and pedestrians due to glass and brick falling out of the building onto the street. West River Street at the intersection of Route 122 remains closed, a detour will remain in place until further notice. Residents are asked to use caution in the area. WIVB-TV CBS 4 NEW YORK Related with Video: $5,000 reward offered for information about massive fire in Massachusetts Dispatchers in Florida county start using video 911 system VIDEO: Dispatchers in Volusia County can now see an emergency in real time using a video 911 system the sheriff's office unveiled this week. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said they're just starting to use it and an incident on Thursday is a great example of when Volusia residents would need it. Witnesses driving on I-4 Thursday afternoon called 911 and took video of a minivan that was swerving into the shoulder, the other lane, and even the median. "The motorists actually slowed down to prevent any cars from going near him as they were calling 911 and filming it," said Chitwood. The sheriff said deputies arrested the driver on DUI charges, and witnesses sent their videos that they recorded to investigators afterward. "I want to use this as an opportunity to hammer home on a new technology that we just started using a week ago called Carbyne," he said. Assistant communications director Glenn Lopez said it starts with a typical 911 phone call and if it's an active situation, the dispatcher can engage a video call. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO Firefighter injured in assault at Indiana fire station Indianapolis firefighters stopped a man with a knife who attacked them after chasing a woman into an east side fire station on Saturday. At around 1 p.m., a firefighter was backing his fire department vehicle into a bay at IFD Station 11, located at 1715 E. Washington Street near Southeastern and South State avenues, when a woman ran past the vehicle and into the station. According to IFD, the woman was in "obvious distress" and yelled that a man was chasing her. That's when the firefighter got out of his vehicle and saw a man running toward the station. The firefighter stepped in front of the man and told him to stop, but the man became aggressive and shoved the firefighter up against the vehicle, injuring him. The engine crew, who were in the kitchen cleaning up from lunch, heard the commotion in the bay and went to see what was going on. They found the man holding the woman with a knife clearly visible in his hand. WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS New York fire boat remains ready to serve the public PHOTOS: Iterations of Last Chance, Clayton's fire boat, have been serving the north country for over 60 years, going where fire trucks can't go. As Clayton Fire Department treasurer and boat Capt. Justin Taylor boarded the boat recently, his pager went off, his phone sounded, and the fire whistle blared through the streets of Clayton. The department was requested to be on standby for an incident on Wellesley Island. Within minutes, seven Clayton firefighters arrived to the boat along with four emergency medical technicians from Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service, ready to respond to the scene. After a few minutes, the Clayton fire boat was disregarded and shortly after, the firefighters and EMTs began to disperse. After a few minutes, the Clayton fire boat was disregarded and shortly after, the firefighters and EMTs began to disperse. The first Clayton fire boat was donated in 1960 by J.P. Lewis, a seasonal Clayton resident. NNY 360 - METERED SITE CDC Study: 97% Of Americans Have Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals' In Their Blood Nearly every American, the CDC says 97%, has some level of "forever chemicals" in their blood because they are found in so many household products. Now, scientists in Arvada are making it easier for you to test your levels at home. PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are commonly known as forever chemicals because they can build up in the body over time. Experts say they can cause a host of health problems, including cancer, reproductive issues and developmental effects. Scientists with EmpowerDX have developed a new, first of its kind, at-home test that allows you to test your PFAS blood levels with just a finger prick. The global laboratory company Eurofins analyzes the samples you take at home and uploads your results to a private online portal. Scientists at a Eurofins lab in Arvada have been studying PFAS closely. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
