Thick smoke could be seen from miles away as a truck caught fire around 7 p.m. Sunday along the Seward Highway near Portage. The Girdwood Fire Department responded to the fire. Fire Chief Michelle Weston said the truck was towing a boat. She said the truck is a total loss, but the driver and passengers were able to disconnect and save the boat. The damage to the truck was so extensive, Weston said they couldn't tell what caused the fire. Weston said there were no injuries or delays thanks to the quick thinking of the driver. The driver was able to safely pull into a nearby parking lot which was recently constructed for hooligan fisherman. Weston also stressed the importance of hooligan fishermen parking in the designated parking areas. Parking along the side of the highway is not ideal for passing emergency vehicles. VIDEO/PHOTOS: Thick black smoke billowed into the air Sunday after a train derailed in northwest Iowa, prompting authorities to evacuate part of a small, nearby town. The fiery derailment happened early Sunday afternoon on the southwest edge of Sibley, which is a town of about 3,000 people roughly 200 miles (321.87 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines. Photos and video of the derailment posted online Sunday show about 30 train cars piled up along the tracks with flames and a large plume of smoke coming from one end of the pile of cars. Local media reports say authorities evacuated an area within 5 miles (8.05 kilometers) of the derailment. Sibley Fire Chief Ken Huls told KIWA radio the train was hauling fertilizer and ammonium nitrate. Nate Minten of Sibley told the Des Moines Register that smoke was still visible around 4:30 p.m. Sunday from his mother's home. KMSP-TV FOX 9 MINNEAPOLIS VIDEO: Mayor Lori Lightfoot has tapped Acting Chicago Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, who lost her teenage son to one of the city's most infamous shootings in 2007, to serve as the first Black woman to run the Chicago Fire Department. Lightfoot announced Nance-Holt's nomination at a graduation ceremony for the latest class of Chicago Fire Department paramedics on Friday. "Pending City Council approval, Annette will be the first-ever female fire commissioner, putting yet another crack in that glass ceiling," Lightfoot said. "I know a thing or two about firsts, so madame commissioner, welcome to the club." Nance-Holt urged the class of 42 new paramedics to treat the patients they serve as members of their own families. "Always remember that you will be answering the call for someone on their worst day, and they will remember how you made them feel. You have an opportunity to leave a lasting impression about the Chicago Fire Department and the services that we provide to our citizens." WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO A "rift." That is how Carter Stewart and Ohio State University described the relationship between Columbus city leaders and the police department. The city has a new social media policy for police officers and firefighters. It says, while social media can be fun, employees could be disciplined, even fired, for saying anything negative about the city and its operations. Many businesses have implemented social media policies for sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Columbus Public Safety put out a new social media policy after an investigation was launched into a Columbus police deputy chief's use of Twitter. "It is clear to me while the City of Columbus can regulate social media of employees, they have gone way too far with this policy. In many instances, it violates the first amendment," said attorney Mark Weaver. WBNS-TV CBS 10 COLUMBUS VIDEO: The FDNY is gearing up for a very busy season on the water. The department answered hundreds of calls last year, and is expecting the same this year. CBS2's Andrea Grymes got an inside look at how they do their job, and what you can do to stay safe. With sunny skies ahead and calm seas around her, Grymes went on patrol with the FDNY's Marine Division. "During these summer seasons, something happens every day," Czyzewski said. "We'll help anyone from shore to shore," said Lt. Joe Czyzewski. Czyzewski and firefighter Mark Rizzuto are just two members of the department's summer boat program, which just started for the season. It adds FDNY boats and manpower to area with lots of recreational activity, like in Raritan Bay, ready to respond to people in trouble at any moment. WCBS-TV CBS 2 NEW YORK Every day, in communities across the country, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers put themselves on the line to save lives, safeguard dangerous situations, and deliver hope to families and communities in crisis.
