A trailer caught on fire Saturday morning in Wrangell's Panhandle Trailer Park. Neighbors rushed to the scene, rescuing the homeowner before firetrucks had even arrived. A fire erupted at 10 AM Saturday morning at the home of an 86-year-old man, Norman Canady. He did escape his trailer, with the help of at least two neighbors, Dan Flickinger and Duke Aitken. "I heard a woof, looked out the window and the porch was on fire," says Flickinger, Canady's nearest neighbor. He called 911 and went to the burning trailer. "The first thing you want to do is see if anyone is in there," Flickinger says. His other neighbor, Aitken, also arrived on scene. "A lady named Linda Churchill was down there pointing at the sky crying, and I stopped my truck and ran up here," he says. Flickinger says they pounded on the walls and ran to the back of the trailer where they found Canady. He was standing at his back entrance with the door open.

Fire crews are working toward full containment of the Moose Meadows Fire which grew in size from 42 acres to 56 acres overnight Saturday, a result of more accurate mapping than fire growth according to the Alaska Division of Forestry. According to a Sunday morning update from DOF, the fire is currently 40 percent contained, with crews hoping to achieve full containment by day's end Sunday. Approximately 45 wildland fire personnel are on the ground in the area located near Moose Meadows Road — a short dirt road leading to a recreational trail to Mount Baldy — including the Pioneer Peak Hotshot Crew and Gannett Glacier Fire Crew. Crews on the ground established a hose line around the entire fire perimeter on Saturday, with water tenders from the West Lakes Fire Department providing water supply.

VIDEO: Twelve firefighters were injured in a fire and explosion in the Toy District of downtown Los Angeles on Saturday evening. As of Sunday afternoon, three have been discharged and eight remain hospitalized. The incident began with a fire that was first reported around 6:26 p.m. on Saturday. As firefighters were responding to the blaze inside the building at 327 East Boyd Street, the site of a butane honey oil supplier called Smoke Tokes, there was a "significant explosion," said LAFD Captain Erik Scott. "After the explosion, the fire absolutely intensified and it shot out 30 feet like a blowtorch right in the path of egress," Scott said. The injured firefighters were transported to County USC Medical Center to be treated for burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Two firefighters were initially put on ventilators and four were sent to the intensive care unit for burns. At last check, there were no remaining firefighters on ventilators. All are expected to survive.

Police and fire investigators launched a criminal probe Sunday into the cause of an explosion at a hash oil manufacturer in downtown Los Angeles that sent firefighters running for their lives. Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's major crimes division were working with the city Fire Department's arson investigators to determine what might have sparked the blast that shot a ball of flames out of the building Saturday night and scorched a fire truck across the street, police spokesman Josh Rubenstein said. "We're in the very early stages of the investigation … to understand what happened and figure out how to move forward," he said. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was assisting local fire investigators, an agency spokeswoman said. The blast injured a dozen firefighters. Some of them who ran out onto sidewalks, where they tore off their burning protective equipment, including melted helmets, officials said.

Sunday is the beginning of National EMS Week when the U.S. recognizes those who serve in emergency medical services. According to the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), National EMS Week was started in 1974 by then-President Gerald Ford. This year in particular, the week is a good opportunity to honor the service that EMTs and paramedics provide to society in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, "one of the most daunting and demanding challenges our country has ever faced," a proclamation signed by President Trump on Friday said. "This week, we recognize these heroic men and women for their efforts to deliver life-saving care and compassion to their fellow Americans, and we acknowledge that our country is a safer and healthier place because of their work," the proclamation said. However, EMTs don't all get paid the same.

A Virginia 911 center is combining remote solutions with FirstNet connectivity as part of a multi-pronged strategy to ensure operational continuity during the COVID-19 pandemic today and to evaluate new technological options for the center in the future. Doug Campbell, deputy director of the Department of Emergency & Customer Communications (DECC) for the city of Alexandria, Va., said such technology capabilities potentially are transformative for the 911 community. "After 30-plus years of doing this, who would have thought we would be doing it [answering 911 calls] at home?" Campbell said during an interview with IWCE's Urgent Communications. "But that's what we're looking at. You kind of have to massage it to fit your needs, but those are pretty cool [solutions], as technology has evolved. I would have never thought that we would be answering calls from home, especially emergency calls.

Early in the novel coronavirus pandemic, Nick Fugate figured he would probably get infected sooner or later. As a paramedic with King County Medic One, he and his colleagues were transporting gravely ill patients every day, amid an atmosphere of uncertainty and urgency. Even now that hospitalizations have declined, Fugate puts his odds at 50-50. "We are still seeing COVID patients pretty regularly, particularly in the nursing home facilities and our other vulnerable populations," he said. So Fugate, who lives in Edmonds, was eager to sign up for an unusual research project that aims to monitor front-line workers for six months to better understand the risks they face and follow the progression of the disease in those who do get sick. Among the goals is figuring out why some people develop symptoms and others do not, and whether people can be infected again after recovering from COVID-19, the disease caused by the new virus.
