Unalaska's Fire Department Responds To Large Fire On Mt. Ballyhoo Officials at Unalaska's fire department are monitoring a large fire that started Wednesday evening on Mt. Ballyhoo near Dutch Harbor's Spit. This is the second large brush fire in Unalaska in the past two weeks. Patrick Shipp, fire chief at the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said they were notified around 5 p.m. about a fire on the side of Mt. Ballyhoo. "When we arrived on scene, down at the end of the Spit, they were burning pallets," said Shipp. "It looked like maybe an ember had gotten out of the pallets that they were burning and started a fire maybe 40 or 50 feet up the side of the hill." When fire crews arrived, it had already grown "pretty big," according to Shipp. He estimated the fire is approximately 15-20 acres and is burning slowly. He did not identify who started it. KUCB 89.7 FM Point MacKenzie area has 2nd grass fire in two days Firefighters are working to contain a 30-acre grass fire in the Point MacKenzie area near South Trumpeter Drive and West New Homesteader Avenue. Tim Mowry, an information officer with the Alaska Division of Forestry, says a helicopter is being used to drop water on the fire. Mowry says approximately 50 personnel are working to battle the blaze. Another helicopter has been called in to assist, along with all-terrain vehicles. One structure about a mile away from the fire is threatened, according to Mowry. Pioneer Peak Hotshots are in place to protect it if necessary. "The fire was reported by a local pilot at approximately 3:47 p.m. and was originally sized up as 2 acres in size but grew rapidly in the dry grass, aided by a light breeze out of the west," according to DOF. Dozen fire trucks mothballed amid drop in Las Vegas Strip emergency calls The Clark County Fire Department is parking a dozen trucks because of a drastic reduction in emergency calls on the Strip, which was closed last month in response to the coronavirus pandemic, officials said. The crews of those units are being reassigned to other areas, and nobody is being laid off, officials said. Units taken out of rotation include five rescue units, four engine companies, one ladder truck, one rescue squad and one battalion chief, officials said. "The majority of these units are in the resort corridor and are usually among the busiest in the country," Fire Chief John Steinbeck said. "The drop in visitor volume has caused service demand to fall significantly in these areas." Steinbeck said the situation was "very fluid" and that "a unit that makes sense to temporarily shut down this week may very well not make sense next week." LAS VEGAS SUN New York: Antibody testing hints at coronavirus' hellish toll on FDNY/EMS, NYPD Nearly 20 percent of FDNY/EMS members and over 10 percent of NYPD cops screened for coronavirus antibodies tested positive, Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed Wednesday, as the state death toll crept towards 18,000. The results came in days after Cuomo announced that 1,000 members from each department would be tested for antibodies, which would indicate that their immune systems battled the bug at some point. Of those screened, some 17.1 percent of FDNY/EMS members tested positive, the governor said. "We believe that's because the EMT number is driving it up," said Cuomo. "They are the frontline." Within the hard-hit NYPD — which has about 55,000 uniformed and civilian employees in total — 10.5 percent of tests came back positive, Cuomo said. NEW YORK POST ‘Unprecedented' contact tracing efforts take shape to contain coronavirus in Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee has called for a "rapid-response" contact tracing effort as part of his plan for the gradual reopening of Washington state, likening it to "something like a fire brigade." Contact tracing is a method by which public health officials identify individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 and track down anyone they may have been in contact with. These contacts are then informed and tested themselves; those who test positive are recommended to self-quarantine for two weeks to prevent further spread of the virus. Individual tracing has previously been used for other disease outbreaks such as tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases. "It definitely has been successful in prior outbreaks and it's used routinely for public health," Dr. Janet Baseman of the School of Public Health said of the practice. When the first case of the virus arrived in King County in late February, early contact tracing efforts were activated, according to Baseman, who led a group of students to aid the measures. THE DAILY How a team of NASA engineers developed a ventilator for COVID-19 patients in just a month VIDEO: Working as an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, David Van Buren usually spends his time designing and building instruments for space telescopes or robots that will explore other worlds in our Solar System. But for the last month, Van Buren and a group of his colleagues at JPL have been working on a project that is truly unexplored terrain for them: making a ventilator to help patients sick with COVID-19. While Van Buren had some previous experience in medical engineering, he'd never designed a ventilator before. But he and his co-workers at JPL are used to making things they don't have any experience making. In fact, they're used to making things that no one has experience making. "When a scientist comes to us and says they want to go to a moon of Jupiter and drill into the ice and see what's underneath, that's something that's never been done before," Van Buren tells The Verge. THE VERGE VIDEO: Fleet of drones display support for healthcare workers and first responders in Pennsylvania Stunning footage shows a fleet of around 150 drones near Franklin Field in University City creating incredible displays in support of healthcare workers and first responders on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company behind it is called Verge Aero, which is based out of the University of Pennsylvania. The video was taken Tuesday night by a member of the Philadelphia Second Alarmers who was on duty when she recorded it. People around the country have been coming together to show their support for front line workers. WTXF-TV FOX 29 PHILADELPHIA PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
