Authorities say a mother and five children were killed early Wednesday morning in a house fire in Noorvik. Alaska State Troopers reported in a dispatch that the remains of all six people were recovered and will be sent to the state medical examiner's office in Anchorage for identification. Fire crews responded to the blaze around 6 a.m., according to Northwest Arctic Borough Public Safety Director Chris Hatch. Troopers said state fire marshals, village public safety officers, and officers with AST responded to put the fire out. Troopers said it appears that the blaze was sparked around a Toyo stove that may have been "in poor condition," but the cause of the fire is still not known. The investigation is ongoing, according to officials.  

An inferno that torched a New Jersey warehouse, spewing smoke seen for miles, is under control authorities say, though firefighters expect to be dousing hotspots throughout the day Thursday. The fire on Nassau Street and Georges Road in North Brunswick erupted at an address linked to an old mattress factory around the time of Wednesday's evening rush. It escalated to eight alarms within hours. The fire was fueled in part by propane tanks and other combustible materials, officials said. Firefighters from as far as an hour from the scene were called to assist, and homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported. Road closures were in effect through the overnight hours. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

VIDEO: When leaders at Sullivan East High School and Kingsport City Schools approached the Kingsport Fire Department to create a co-op program for students in its fire science classes, Assistant Fire Chief Terry Arnold said the department was interested right away. "It is a great benefit, number one to give back to the community, and for recruitment," Arnold told News Channel 11. The program's first two students, seniors Dustin Gragg from Sullivan East and Alexander Thompson from Dobyns-Bennett, got started this semester. The students spend 20 to 25 hours of their week at Kingsport's fire stations as part of a paid internship. Thompson told News Channel 11 that so far he's gotten to visit stations and training grounds, along with helping set up for future training.
