Iowithla River fire now 19,500 acres and just 9.3 miles from Dillingham The Iowithla River fire is now only 9.3 miles from Dillingham. The Alaska Division of Forestry dispatched one plane Tuesday to douse the flames. However, smoke prevented the plane from flying to the area, according to an update from the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center. A Division of Forestry official said Wednesday afternoon that several planes from King Salmon are dropping water on the blaze today. There are no staff on the fire now, but they will continue to monitor the fire's progression towards Dillingham and other nearby structures. The flames are about two feet high and so far it has burned around 19,500 acres. Smoke from the Iowithla fire is blowing into Dillingham and may cause breathing problems. The Dillingham Fire Department recommends that sensitive or compromised individuals wear N-95 masks until air quality improves. THE BRISTOL BAY TIMES Close call for two fires in Fairbanks Two fires yesterday in Fairbanks' subdivisions could have been disastrous to the neighborhoods around them. The first occurred off Skyline Drive in the middle of the afternoon. Steese Volunteer Fire Department responded along with Alaska Division of Forestry engines and Helitack to a 0.5-acre fire burning in grass and hardwoods. Investigation determined a resident hadn't realized they sparked a fire while working outdoors. The fire was contained and controlled. Firefighters are returning today to ensure there are no lingering hot spots. The second fire was in Noyes Slough in the Aurora Subdivision. University Fire Department along with Fairbanks Fire Department responded and requested Forestry. The 0.1-acre fire was contained, controlled, and placed in monitor status. ALASKA WILDLAND FIRE INFORMATION Type 2 Incident Management Team assigned to support remote firefighting operations in southwest Alaska The Alaska Type 2 Incident Management Black Team under Incident Commander Ed Sanford has been mobilized to assist fire managers and fire personnel defending villages, lodges, cabins, native allotments, mining infrastructure and other values at risk in southwest Alaska. In addition to mobilizing resources from the Lower 48 and Canada to assist suppression efforts, this interagency effort will establish and maintain supply chains, remote fueling depots for aviation assets, and will help identify additional cabins, lodges and other values at risk threatened by these remote interior lightning caused wildfires. With 40 million acres of land in this one area, the aerial reconnaissance flights alone take significant amounts of time. The team is made up of wildfire specialists from Alaska and the Lower 48 and includes career smokejumpers and hot shots who have extended experience working in this and other remote and challenging areas of Alaska. 'It was horrific': 8 unit condo under construction in California engulfed by fire A terrifying fire engulfed an eight unit condo that was under construction and surrounded by numerous occupied homes Wednesday. The fire happened near 5301 East Commerce Way and about 8 units under construction were affected by the fire, according to the Sacramento Fire Department. Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated, but have since been allowed back into their homes. The fire was captured on video by neighbor Savan Patel and his wife as they fled the Artisan Square neighborhood along Commerce Way just after midnight Wednesday. Some building windows from across the street melted due to the heat from the flames. "It melted a broom, a plastic broom in the top master bedroom," said a man named Frank, who was visiting family in the area. KXTV ABC 10 SACRAMENTO Related: Drone video shows aftermath of Natomas condo fire Maryland State Firemen's Association voting to change name Over the weekend firefighters from around Maryland are coming together to Ocean City for their annual conference. One item on the agenda is voting to rename the Maryland State Firemen's Association to Maryland State Firefighter's Association. 44 state fire-fighting organizations have legally changed their names to be gender inclusive. Senator Cheryl Kagan has been named legislator of the year by the association for the past two years and says the name is sexist and inaccurate especially because three of Maryland's largest counties have fire chiefs who are women. She urges those who are voting this weekend to think of all the women who risk their lives for our safety who are not reflected by the name of the association. "The symbols matter inclusion matters," said Sen. Kagan. WDVM-TV 25 HAGERSTOWN ‘Beer Rescue': New firetruck in North Carolina catching looks for distributing beer VIDEO: A new firetruck in Statesville won't be putting out fires anytime soon. In fact, it's not even part of the fire department. A brewery in town has manufactured its own fire engine to help quench the thirst of beer enthusiasts. The owner of Red Buffalo Brewing Company in Downtown Statesville wanted to expand his business without buying another brick-and-mortar location. After seeing a firetruck converted into a food truck at a festival, an idea came to mind, why not use a fire truck to pour beer? By law, you don't have to pull over for the firetruck in Statesville, but perhaps you'll want to. When the red lights are flashing, the beer is ready to pour. "People will say you're crazy, but then they love it. So it's good crazy," said the owner of Red Buffalo Brewing Company, Joe Bondi. WHZY-TV FOX 46 BELMONT Nearly 400 Crashes Of Automated Vehicles Reported Over Past 10 Months Automakers reported nearly 400 crashes over a 10-month period involving vehicles with partially automated driver-assist systems, including 273 with Teslas, according to statistics released Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cautioned against using the numbers to compare automakers, saying it didn't weight them by the number of vehicles from each manufacturer that use the systems, or how many miles those vehicles traveled. Automakers reported crashes from July of last year through May 15 under an order from the agency, which is examining such crashes broadly for the first time. "As we gather more data, NHTSA will be able to better identify any emerging risks or trends and learn more about how these technologies are performing in the real world," said Steven Cliff, the agency's administrator. WJZ-TV CBS 13 BALTIMORE Pennsylvania House approves bill to improve junior firefighter training Junior firefighters are one step closer to having access to improved training after the House unanimously approved a bill by Rep. Torren Ecker (R-Adams/Cumberland) to prepare junior firefighters for becoming full firefighters. "Volunteer fire companies across the nation, and right here in Pennsylvania, are facing staff shortages that is projected to only get worse if nothing is done," Ecker, a former junior firefighter, said. "This bill will help prepare firefighters who are just beginning to serve and will entice them to stay in the fire service." House Bill 2268 would permit a 17-year-old junior firefighter to complete the Interior Firefighting Module with Live Burns training program in the Fire Training System. Currently, only people 18 and over are allowed to enroll in the training program. WHTM-TV ABC 27 HARRISBURG PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
