Follow-up: Disaster declared for Tuluksak after fire Gov. Mike Dunleavy authorized a disaster declaration for the Tuluksak water system fire that occurred on Jan. 16, 2021, when someone in the village apparently torched the laundromat, where the water system was located that serves the 320 people in the community. The Disaster Declaration activates the State of Alaska Public Assistance program which is designed to help communities, government organizations, and certain non-profits make repairs to utilities, public buildings, and other critical infrastructure damaged by the declared event. In addition, the public assistance disaster declaration will reimburse communities and agencies for eligible response costs associated with the disaster event. The authorization of the disaster declaration follows weeks of discussion by a multiagency group including the State of Alaska, the Tuluksak Native Community, federal and local partners to ensure the village had no shortage of drinking water following the destruction of the water treatment plant and washeteria. Firefighters battle 4-alarm warehouse fire in New Jersey, senior high-rise evacuated VIDEO: Firefighters responded to a four-alarm fire in Pleasantville, New Jersey that destroyed a warehouse and injured two firefighters. Crews were called to the 100 block of Main Street shortly before midnight Tuesday. Twenty companies responded from the surrounding areas. The warehouse, filled with auto parts and tires, collapsed in on itself after an intense fire raged for hours overnight. "When I seen the flames, it was time to go," said resident John Bland. The warehouse is located behind retail stores on Main Street and next to a Pleasantville Housing Authority senior high-rise, where residents were evacuated. "They were knocking on all the doors and stuff, so I just went and got my cat," said resident Mahdi Carr. Residents of the high-rise were able to return home around 2 a.m. WPVI-TV ABC 6 PHILADELPHIA Hypothermia, rising tide among dangers as Florida firefighters rescue man from river VIDEO/PHOTOS: Jacksonville firefighters saved a 27-year-old man in a dramatic rescue Saturday evening in the St. Johns River, hoisting him out of the water after his car fell over the Dames Point Bridge. Photos from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department show a captain harnessing the man as crews on the bridge pulled him to safety. The driver had gotten out of his car, which was underwater. He was taken to the hospital, but amazingly only had minor injuries after the 35-foot fall in his vehicle. The accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-295 approaching the Merrill Road exit. The conditions were dark, cold and rainy, adding to the danger of the situation. "When I first got down to him, obviously, he was very thankful that I was there," said JFRD Capt. Phillip Orelli, the rescuer who lowered down to pull the man up. "He was very cold, and he was just really appreciative, and he was ready to get out of that water." WJXT-TV NEWS 4 JACKSONVILLE A decade later, deadly Pennsylvania gas explosion continues to spur safety changes, haunt neighbors PHOTOS: The emptiness across the block still unsettles Elsa Reyes after midnight, when she returns from work to her North 13th Street home in Allentown. During the first five years Reyes lived on the east side of the 500 block, eight row homes stood across the street. Her son Joel would walk to school with a girl, Katherine Cruz, who lived at 542 N. 13th St. But for a long time now, Reyes has turned the corner at Allen Street to see nothing but five small white crosses on the end of a vacant lot. Ten years ago Tuesday night, a natural gas explosion leveled the homes, killing 16-year-old Cruz; her 4-month-old son, Matthew Manuel Vega; and her 69-year-old grandmother, Ofelia Ben. A couple living next door — William Hall, 79, and his wife, Beatrice, 74 — also died. Long after the debris was cleared, the site has remained subdivided into eight undeveloped plots. At night, the emptiness plays mind games with the neighbors who lived through the disaster. Cathy Royack, who lives a few doors down from Reyes, sometimes sees the Halls' Christmas lights THE MORNING CALL - METERED SITE VIDEO: Oklahoma fire crews climb on top of cars to reach patients trapped in wreckage As first responders are busy reporting to multiple accidents across the metro, officials say the cold temperatures and slick spots are wreaking havoc on rescue efforts. Batt. Chief Benny Fulkerson, with the Oklahoma City Fire Department, told KFOR that crews had already responded to 32 wrecks before 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning. "Like you all are saying, it's those bridges and overpasses, and especially in the northern and western parts of our city, and even along the I-40 corridor. It's just, it's treacherous. I've been listening to our firefighters on these calls, on the radio traffic, and they just said, ‘This is a sheet of ice. We have eight vehicles involved. We've got 12 vehicles involved in this one.' It's just one after another," said Fulkerson. Fulkerson says drivers appear to be going too fast on the bridges and overpasses, which is causing them to lose traction. At that point, there is no way for them to slow down.
