Girdwood Fire Department highlights importance of bystander CPR With many rural areas of Alaska miles away from the nearest hospital, CPR — short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation — or chest compressions can be critical in saving a life. The Girdwood Fire Department used a demonstration Sunday to highlight the effectiveness of CPR and offered tips and guidance for individuals who might need to use it. "Bystander CPR has been shown through numerous studies and cases across the nation to drastically improve the chances of survival," Basic Life Support provider Stuart Parry said. "In Girdwood, we are often away from definitive care. So it is really important that we have that bystander CPR to start things off." With the drive from Girdwood to Anchorage taking anywhere from 40 minutes or more, based on conditions, the time to act quickly is even more imperative, even if the person doing CPR isn't confident in their abilities. VIDEO: Chicago Fire Department battles extra-alarm warehouse fire The Chicago Fire Department battled an extra-alarm fire in a West Side warehouse Tuesday morning. The fire was in a one-story commercial building in the 4500-block of West Fulton Street. Chopper 7HD flew above the scene, where flames could be seen pouring through the roof of the warehouse. The fire raged for more than an hour and around 7:45 a.m., CFD said it had been struck. More than 100 firefighters responded to the fire. "Because of the size and the length of the building we had to escalate the alarm for more manpower," Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Donald Walker said. The building sustained major damage, including the collapse of the roof. Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Walker said the building housed a masonry business There are no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO ‘Decon Kits' hope to help prevent cancer in Alabama firefighters VIDEO: January is firefighter cancer awareness month. It's a time for departments and advocates to raise awareness about the ongoing occupational hazards that firefighters face every day. According to research by the CDC and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Firefighters have a nine percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a fourteen percent higher risk of dying from cancer than the average person but, advocates in Alabama are working toward ways to help lower those statistics. Toney Volunteer Fire Department President Heath Jones said the Huntsville Fire Department's Cancer Committee is investing in helping local departments fight one of the main factors that contribute to a higher risk of cancer among firefighters, namely the absorption of hazardous chemicals through their skin. The department is doing this with new decon kits. WHNT-TV CBS 19 HUNTSVILLE California: Suspect Steals Ambulance in San Francisco, Abandons it in Oakland VIDEO: Police are searching for a suspect who stole an ambulance in San Francisco Monday night. This all happened when paramedics were in the process of brining a patient to the ambulance in the area of 47th Avenue and Irving Street at 6:42 p.m. The California Highway Patrol was able to locate the ambulance using GPS and pursued it through San Mateo and Alameda counties before it got onto city streets in Oakland, the San Francisco Fire Department said. The CHP stopped the pursuit out of caution for other drivers and eventually found the ambulance abandoned on a nearby street. The suspect has not been identified or found, firefighters said. The patient who was supposed to get into the ambulance was not hurt and was taken to the hospital. No emergency personnel was hurt either, firefighters said. KNTV NBC 11 SAN JOSE Why some say Tennessee's 'Move Over' law needs stronger enforcement to prevent first responder crashes, deaths ‘Move over' is a law created to protect first responders on the scene of incidents. Unfortunately, drivers continue to ignore the siren and the flashing lights and it's costing people their lives. After six big wrecks involving Memphis firefighters, leaders and families say enough is enough. Now there are calls to stiffen penalties for drivers who break the law, and for more enforcement. "They call, we show up," said Thomas Malone, President of the Memphis Firefighter Association. Malone served the Memphis community for 34 years as a firefighter. "I can remember when I was an active firefighter, when we rode on the tailboards, people would get out of the way," he said. But Malone said it's a much different situation today, with more and more drivers who won't move over. "For whatever reason now, it's just like, they're constantly riding to the tail of the equipment," he said. WATN-TV ABC 24 MEMPHIS Longtime firefighter dedicated to telling the story of the Denver Fire Department VIDEO: When Denver's Fire Station Number 1 was built in 1909, firetrucks were still pulled by horses. One-hundred-fourteen years later, the horses are gone but the building remains as a tribute to the men and women who have dedicated their lives to keeping the city safe. "The fire house itself is just something that's very cherished," says long time firefighter Steve Montoya. After 30 years in the Denver Fire Department, Steve has spent much of the past decade honoring his fellow firefighters at the Denver Firefighters Museum. "There's an old saying, ‘Once a Marine always a Marine.' Same with firefighters. You know, it's something you never leave." The show piece of the museum is a truck known as EO4. It's the truck that carries firefighters to their final resting places. Steve was in charge of rebuilding it, tearing it all the way down and replacing the motor, transmission and more. He is also the driver during funerals for firefighters. KMGH-TV ABC 7 DENVER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
