Division of Forestry tackling small wildfire near Nenana The Alaska Division of Forestry out of Fairbanks is responding to a small wildfire burning several miles east of Nenana. The fire was reported on Monday afternoon and is burning 11 miles east of Nenana near the Tanana River, the division wrote in a Facebook post. It's being called the Fish Creek Fire and was estimated to be about 2 acres in size around 6 p.m. Monday evening, according to Public Information Officer Tim Mowry. The wildfire is burning in tundra grass and black spruce, according to the division's post. "Fire behavior was reported to creeping and smoldering with some tree torching," the post states. No structures are currently threatened by the fire, but the division did note that the Alaska Intertie transmission line is about 200-300 feet west of the blaze. KTVA-TV CBS 11 ANCHORAGE Warm, dry weather and lightning produce uptick in wildfire activity in Southcentral Alaska Warm, dry conditions and lightning resulted in a spike in wildfire activity in Southcentral Alaska over the weekend. There were five new fires reported in the Mat-Su protection area, including three that were attributed to lightning. Prior to those lightning starts, there had been only one lightning-caused fire in Alaska so far this season – a 7-acre fire near McGrath on May 15. There were also five new, human-caused wildfires reported in the Kenai/Kodiak protection area over the weekend, including an approximately 50-acre fire on Kodiak Island that wildland firefighters are working to mop up today. The Kalsin Creek Fire is burning on the east side of Kodiak Island between the Olds River and Kalsin Creek. It is less than a quarter mile from Pasagshak Road and approximately 10 miles southeast of Womens Bay. AK FIRE INFO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters Battle Explosive Building Fire in Downtown Los Angeles VIDEO: Over 100 firefighters are battling an explosive fire in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday morning. The fire broke out at a three-story building in the 200 block of S. Los Angeles Street, near 3rd Street shortly before 2 a.m. Los Angeles Fire Department says it has declared it a "major emergency" fire, and 150 firefighters are "still in an active firefight." No injuries have been reported. Small popping sounds could be heard in video from the scene, and flames were seen on both sides of the street. A homeless encampment across the street caught on fire, LAFD said. The Red Cross is assisting those that were displaced by the fire, LAFD Public Information Officer Erik Scott said. There are nearby residential buildings but it was not immediately clear if residents were asked to evacuate. WPDE-TV ABC 15 FLORENCE Wisconsin man surpasses world pushup record to support first responders A Wisconsin man appears to have broken the world record for most pushups in a year in his effort to raise money for the families of fallen first responders. Nate Carroll, of Winneconne, completed his 1,500,231st pushup Sunday at the 50-yard line during halftime of the 48th annual Fun City Bowl, a football game between New York City first responders at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. And while the record — held since October 1989 by British athlete Paddy Doyle — still needs to be verified by the Guinness Book of World Records and the Record Holders Republic Registry of Official World Records, Carroll is continuing to add to his total. He has until Sunday to complete a year of pushups. WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL Colorado town's first motorized fire truck restored to its former glory VIDEO: A project in Pueblo more than than two decades in the making is finally complete. Pueblo's first-ever motorized fire truck has been restored. The 110-year-old vehicle has helped out in some of the city's most significant emergencies, like the Great Flood of 1921 and the opera house fire of 1922. The Pueblo Firefighter's Historical Society took on the task of restoring the fire engine to its former glory. "I think it is very important because of the fact that it is the first motorized fire apparatus. A lot of fire departments, even some of them back east that are older than us, don't have their first motorized fire apparatus," Gary Micheli with the Pueblo Firefighter's Historical Society said. If you want to check out the restored fire truck, it is on display at the Pueblo Firefighters Historical Society Center on 2nd and Main in downtown Pueblo. KOAA-TV NBC 5 PUEBLO North Carolina county EMS to participate in Duke University study Every year, more than 300,000 people die from cardiac arrest, but a new study could help cut into that number for communities around here. When your heart stops, time is of the essence, but that doesn't just go for paramedics getting on scene. "Good compressions on someone? A maximum of two minutes — a minute, really ideal," said Rich Burns, Brunswick County's EMS training coordinator. How paramedics respond once they get there is just as critical. That's why Brunswick County EMS is part of a Duke University study to look into the best practices for treating cardiac arrest. Similar studies have already led to real changes in the county. "This is the same type of thing that started our Pit Crew CPR which we started several years ago," said EMS deputy director Lyle Johnston. WECT-TV NBC 6 WILMINGTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
