A Girdwood professional skier died Sunday in a paragliding accident near Eagle River, according to Alaska State Troopers. Troopers said Josh Randich, 33, died Sunday after he crashed near Magnificent Peak. Troopers got a report of the crash at 1:42 p.m. "The caller stated they were photographing a paraglider and lost sight of it," troopers said in an online dispatch. Troopers spokesman John Dougherty said Randich was out paragliding with a group of friends. It's unclear what caused him to crash. Dougherty said no one witnessed the wreck. Within about 15 minutes, two friends reached the crash site at an altitude of about 2,700 feet and initiated CPR, Dougherty said. An Alaska Air National Guard Pave Hawk helicopter then flew Randich to an Anchorage hospital, where troopers said he was pronounced dead.  

Today marks one year since the massive fire on Morton Avenue tore through a warehouse in the early morning of October 17, 2022. That fire burned across the block the entire morning, and smoldered for the next few days. The Evansville Fire Department was called to the scene and spent several days there before that fire was completely out. We've since learned the fire was started on the third floor of the building after someone started it to keep warm. We also learned last year from Division Chief Larson that there were no injuries. Back in May, some of the debris was cleared, but a large part remains untouched. During the fire, three other surrounding buildings were impacted. Those businesses were at extreme risks, including Evansville Garage Doors, which EFD was able to save.  

Frank Granados was training with the Tucson Fire Department when a new firefighting product was introduced at the site. After igniting a pool of JP-4 jet fuel, the crew deployed the product, a type of foam, and extinguished the fire in about 40 seconds, nearly twice as fast as anything they'd used before. "It put out fire like nobody's business. Incredible stuff," said Granados, now a senior advisor for the Rio Rico Medical and Fire District, which serves the town about 15 miles north of the Arizona-Mexico border. It also smelled better than the protein-based foam they were using before, which had animal blood in it. After that trial in the 1980s, the department kept both foams on hand, but in Tucson and across the country, Aqueous Film Forming Foam, or AFFF, became the standard for handling flammable liquid fires, known as Class B fires, for half a century.  

Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku revealed that he suffered serious facial injuries in a home fire pit accident and wants to raise money for burn victims and research. In statements posted by the American Burn Association and on his own social media, the 27-year-old New Jersey native launched a merchandise brand, "Withstand," to generate those funds. "I want to use my platform to help bring awareness to an all too common issue and shed some positive light on an otherwise unfortunate incident," Njoku said. The accident happened on Sept. 29 in Cleveland, but Njoku still played in the Browns' Week 4 game against the Baltimore Ravens just two days later, said Brandon Austin, co-founder of the player's merchandise promoter Millions. Njoku showed up to the stadium for that Oct. 1 game wearing a full mask over his face.
