Anchorage and Chugiak students create 'thank you' video for essential workers, first responders The coronavirus pandemic has changed the lives of people across Alaska. Restaurants, businesses, and schools were closed; people are still required to stay physically distant from one another. However, people have started to do acts of kindness for people in their communities. One such act happened here in Alaska when a group of Anchorage and Chugiak government students came together to make a "thank you" video for essential workers and first responders. "It was actually my advisor's idea," said Brandon Gall, Student Body President at Service High School. "I really didn't think about the impact it could have until the video was done - because I really didn't think about all the hard work and extra hours our essential workers and first responders were putting in." KTUU-TV NBC 2 ANCHORAGE Southeast Alaska exempted from May 1 statewide burn permit suspension The Alaska Division of Forestry will exempt Southeast Alaska from a planned May 1 statewide burn permit suspension, as the region's weather, fuel types and fire history put it at less risk of wildland fire than mainland Alaska. "Most of Southeast Alaska is composed of coastal rainforest where wildfires have a very difficult time starting and spreading, unlike the black spruce and boreal forests to the north," said Chris Maisch, director of the Division of Forestry. "What few wildfires that do occur in Southeast are small and more easily managed by local fire departments." Permitted burning will be allowed in Southeast Alaska on state, municipal and private lands, including the City of Cordova and extending south, while burn permits in all other parts of the state will be suspended beginning May 1, Maisch said. $10B sought in next stimulus bill for nation's fire departments in need of PPE, funding Some fire departments around the country are growing desperate for more personal protective equipment and funding to fully operate during this pandemic. While most departments in the D.C. area say they have what they need, some recognize the possibility of running out. Some fire departments around the U.S. have been forced to get creative when it comes to protecting fire and EMS workers on the front lines. For example, some firefighters in Phoenix, AZ have been spotted wearing ponchos. Others have been seen handling COVID-19 patients without gowns. Gary Ludwig, an Illinois fire chief and president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, said fire departments should not have to go through this. "Right now, I can't say that we feel like a priority," Ludwig said. WDVM-TV CBS 25 HAGERSTOWN Data Science Wizards Tell Us What's Really Happening With Coronavirus The global curve is flattening, but COVID-19 (coronavirus) infections are still rising and new hotspots, like Brazil, may be emerging. That's a big improvement from weeks of dire, exponential growth across the world. But global or even U.S.-wide stats are difficult to parse when you're trying to figure out if the local situation in your town and state is getting better or worse. Fortunately, a mix of leading data visualization specialists and passionate scientists have crunched the numbers on COVID-19 (healthcare statistics being compiled by the likes of Johns Hopkins or the New York Times) for graphs and visualizations that help shed light on the spread of the virus. Find out how well your county is battling the outbreak compared to others, or whether a state is really flattening its curve, or maybe more importantly, how flat the curve needs to get. POPULAR MECHANICS Editorial: Health care suicides are another tragic toll of the coronavirus pandemic "She tried to do her job, and it killed her": So said Dr. Philip Breen of his daughter, Dr. Lorna Breen, the medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital — who died by suicide Sunday in Charlottesville, Va., where she was staying with family. Her work amid the coronavirus pandemic took such a toll. "She was truly in the trenches of the front line," he told The New York Times. "Make sure she's praised as a hero, because she was. She's a casualty just as much as anyone else who died." Not only did Lorna Breen care for patients affected by COVID-19; she was infected herself — then tried to go back to work after recuperating for a week and a half. Her hospital sent her home again, and her family brought her to Charlottesville. Breen isn't the only frontliner to take her own life after witnessing the horrors of the coronavirus firsthand: A rookie Bronx EMT, John Mondello, killed himself Friday after less than three months on the job, police sources told The Post. NEW YORK POST Mattel honors workers leading fight against COVID-19 with special edition #ThankYouHeroes collection Mattel is honoring essential workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight with a special edition #ThankYouHeroes collection from Fisher-Price. The collection will include sixteen different figures that will be a selection of doctors, nurses, EMTs and delivery drivers. Mattel will also offer a special five-character Little People set that includes a grocery store worker figure. "#ThankYouHeroes is designed to immortalize and honor healthcare workers and every day heroes," Chuck Scothon, Senior Vice President of Fisher-Price and global head of Infant and Preschool at Mattel said. "Whether these toys are given as a gift to recognize someone working on the front lines, or used as a tool to help children have a conversation about how they're feeling, it is our hope that Fisher-Price toys, and play in general, can ultimately make these difficult times easier for both kids and adults."
