One dead in cabin fire near Fairbanks A fire off McGrath Road claimed the life of one man early Tuesday morning. According to the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety, the fire was reported around 2:00 a.m. and the Steese Volunteer Fire Department responded. Once on scene they found a secondary cabin on the property fully engulfed in flames and were told there was likely an adult male inside. Firefighters were able to get control of the fire and enter the cabin. Inside, they found human remains. A deputy state fire marshal from Fairbanks is investigating the cause of the fire. The human remains were sent to the state medical examiner's office to confirm the identity and determine the cause of death. According to the press release, there are no indications of foul play and the investigation is ongoing. KTVF-TV NBC 11 FAIRBANKS Anchorage firefighters receive second dose of COVID-19 vaccine The first round of Anchorage Fire Department employees rolled up their sleeves Tuesday to get a second dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Assistant Chief Mike Crotty called it a "good thing." He said the virus has taken a toll on the department at times, stretching resources and personnel thin. "Folks are starting to get a little worn down, frankly, by this," said Crotty. The department prioritizes the patient's health, he said, but the virus has impacted the people who protect them. "If we have too many of our folks on quarantine or home with COVID, we can't staff our ambulances and firetrucks. And that's a chief concern for us." Despite that, the vaccination isn't mandatory. Crotty said a survey taken in early December of the Anchorage, Girdwood and Chugiak fire departments showed 72% would consent to get the vaccine. Crotty said recent numbers show that 75.5% of Anchorage Fire Department employees received the first dose, while the percentages in Chugiak (62%) and Girdwood (41%) were lower. So they're getting new equipment to make sure crews are protected. The newest addition to firefighter safety in their cars are Active Air Purification Systems. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue is installing 63 of them in fire trucks, ambulances, ladder trucks and other vehicles. They're designed with advanced photo-hydro-ionization and UV technology. They kill 99 percent of pathogens, including COVID-19, in the air and on surfaces. That means better air quality and a safer cab environment, giving crews another level of protection. "It gives them peace of mind so to speak, because every day is a challenge right now. Not only a challenge to go on the emergency calls we're going on right now, but being challenged responding during a pandemic. And it helps keep my staffing levels up and keeps my folks safe to respond to every kind of emergency with family members and citizens of the community," says Deputy Chief Jason Dougherty with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.
