State Division of Forestry Seeks Suggestions for Fire Prevention Mascot The Alaska Division of Forestry is looking to the public for suggestions to name this moose, which is the face of a new state fire prevention program. The Alaska Division of Forestry has unveiled the new face of statewide fire prevention, and now wants the public's help to give it a name. The state's new fire prevention campaign, titled "Take Time to Learn Before You Burn" comes after the state legislature passed House Bill 355 two years ago. The updated law changes penalties associated with illegal burning and is aimed at reducing human-caused wildfires. Created with help from the U.S. Forest Service, the initiative hopes to reduce human-caused wildfires in Alaska by ten percent per year. The prevention program's logo features a cartoon moose, and the Division of Forestry is looking to Alaskans to help name it. Individuals and groups may submit suggested names. Five finalists will be chosen for an online vote, which will happen in September. KTNA-FM 88.9 PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

House fire, partial collapse sends 3 Houston firefighters to the hospital Three Houston Fire Department firefighters were taken to the hospital to be treated for the injuries they received while battling a house fire early Wednesday. The fire was reported around 2 a.m. at a home in the 8900 block of Wynmeadow, not far from Monroe and I-45. When firefighters arrived, the one-story home was already engulfed in flames. HFD District Chief Chris Chavez said firefighters were aggressively fighting the blaze until there was a small collapse, injuring three firefighters. Other firefighters were suffering from the heat and humidity and had to be rotated out often, Chavez said. The firefighters hurt by the debris were taken to the hospital as the rest of the crew went into defensive mode. Their conditions were not immediately known. It took about an hour to get the fire fully under control as it extended from the home to a four-car garage as well. The cause is under investigation. KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON All-female firefighter crew staffs California station for first time in history For the first time in the history of the Pasadena Fire Department, the entire engine crew rolling out of Station 34 was female. On Tuesday, the all-female crew were under the command of Capt. Tricia Rodriguez. "FIRST all-female crew in history of Pasadena Fire Department riding together on Engine 34," a social media post picturing the four of them said. The team consisted of Rodriguez, two firefighters and an engineer. The four say they found out the previous night they were all going to be working together on the same shift. "The message to anyone is, if you have a dream or a vision, you can achieve it," Rodriguez said. "This is something we have looked forward to growing up and we put a lot of effort into it. We trained, and we studied and we took the same test everybody else did and we didn't give up." The firefighters say the staffing isn't permanent and isn't likely to happen very often. It worked out on Tuesday due to vacations and overtime in the department. KABC-TV ABC 7 LOS ANGELES CDC director: COVID-19 has 'brought this nation to its knees' COVID-19 has "brought this nation to its knees," Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Tuesday. The country is probably going to spend about $7 trillion "because of one little virus," Redfield said during a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing. "We've all done the best that we can do to tackle this virus." Redfield's comments were made as half of US states are seeing spikes in new coronavirus cases -- and it's not just due to increased testing, health officials say. As of Tuesday, 25 states have recorded higher rates of new cases compared to last week: Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. And no state has effectively transitioned from stay-at-home orders "to a public health model of testing, tracking, isolating and quarantining," said Dr. Richard Besser, former acting director of the US CDC. CNN Firefighters injured in 4th of July explosion sue city in New Mexico With the 4th of July right around the corner, many people are gearing up to celebrate. In Roswell, however, the holiday is a painful reminder of the loss of one of their own. Last year, a huge explosion injured 12 firefighters and left one dead as they were preparing for the city's annual fireworks display. Roswell firefighter Jeff Stroble, 46, passed away a few days after the incident. Now, some of those who were injured are looking to hold someone responsible for that explosion. A lawsuit filed Tuesday in Chavez County District Court alleges that the city put those firefighters in harm's way. It also claims that the company that sold the fireworks did not do enough to warn them of potential dangers. According to the document, a dozen firefighters were moving cases of fireworks from storage to a city building June 5. Firefighters were attaching "e-matches" to the fireworks when one ignited and exploded. The suit is representing the wife of Jeff Stroble and seven other firefighters injured that day. KOB-TV NBC 4 ALBUQUERQUE New York City Mayor announces crackdown on illegal fireworks after protest outside mayor's mansion VIDEO: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) announced a task force Tuesday aimed at cracking down on illegal fireworks after city residents have registered thousands of complaints. "We have concerns about this from all over the city, this is a real problem. It is not just a quality of life problem and noise problem, and it is certainly that … but it can also be dangerous," the mayor said Tuesday at a press conference. The task force will include members of the New York Police Department, the Sheriff's Office, and the Fire Department of the City of New York. De Blasio announced the effort after a drive-by protest the night before outside Gracie Mansion. Video footage of the protest shows cars aggressively honking horns outside the mayor's residence.
