Sitka Fire Department aids stranded Goddard Hot Springs visitors The Sitka Fire Department helped some stranded hot tub soakers get back to Tom Young Cabin on Monday night (5-2-22). A group of people had traveled by water taxi to the city-owned cabin to spend the night and soak at Goddard Hot Springs, around 16 miles south of Sitka. The hot springs are located just southeast of the cabin – around 1500 feet across Hot Springs Bay. The campers took two kayaks with them, and were making trips towing small groups over to the hot tubs. Fire Chief Craig Warren says the wind kicked up later in the day, and they weren't able to get both boats back to the cabin – leaving the group split, with some at the cabin and some stuck at the hot springs. They called for the fire department's assistance around 5:30 p.m. KCAW-FM 104.7 SITKA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Florida scrapyard fire sends smoke billowing into sky, shuts down part of road VIDEO/PHOTO: Firefighters were called to a scrapyard fire in Tampa that sent heavy plumes of smoke into the sky on Tuesday evening. Tampa Fire Rescue were called to Worldwide Scrap Metals on North Lois Avenue to what they said was a "fully-involved" scrapyard fire. Tampa Fire said they got help from workers at the scrapyard, who used their excavator to move the piles around to allow firefighters to attack hotspots. The fire was under control within 45 minutes, according to Tampa Fire. No injuries were reported. According to a tweet from TFR, Lois was shut down between West Cayuga Street and West MLK Boulevard. The fire sent heavy smoke into the sky near Raymond James Stadium and the Tampa International Airport. The smoke was visible from WFLA's tower camera but cleared up shortly before 8 p.m. WFLA-TV NBC 8 TAMPA California fire department to celebrate 100-year anniversary of service PHOTOS: On Saturday, May 7, Atascadero firefighters and community members will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the city's fire department, Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services. This year, Atascadero Fire & Emergency Services is celebrating 100 years of fire service to their community. Atascadero firefighters would like to honor those who came before them, recognize all who are currently serving and express appreciation for those who will carry on the legacy into the future. In 1915, Atascadero fire protection was initially provided by volunteers who responded to the fire scene and were paid $1.00 per fire. Volunteers were directed by Lew Cole, who owned his own fire engine and was hired only during the summer months. Community leaders had also purchased a Ford Model T truck equipped with a soda-acid tank to respond to fires in these early years. KEYT-TV ABC 3 SANTA BARBARA Meet North Carolina's only first responders who save lives, fight fires and also stop crime Capt. Josh Gibson has learned to expect the unexpected. Adjusting his baseball cap and running a hand through his short, dark brown beard, he remembers a day in 2020 when the six officers manning the Bald Head Island Public Safety Department couldn't seem to catch a break. A large structure fire broke out in the Keepers Landing area of the island. The officers on duty responded and held off the fire alone while waiting for mutual aid to respond to the island — a 20-minute ferry ride from Southport. When aid arrived, two of the officers suffered extreme fatigue and heat exhaustion. One had to be airlifted to the mainland for medical treatment. Once the fire was under control, a fire alarm call came in that had to be checked out. Exhausted, the officers responded. Then came the medical call: A man suffered severe head trauma after falling off a bike. As that patient was being airlifted off the island, a death notification call came in. STAR NEWS ONLINE - METERED SITE Study led by Louisiana State University Health shows firefighters more at risk for dangerous heart condition VIDEO: A new study, led by LSU Health Shreveport cardiac electrophysiologist and professor Dr. Paari Dominic, finds that firefighters are at an increased risk for a dangerous heart condition. Atrial fibrillation, or A-Fib, is an irregular heart rhythm in the top chambers of the heart. The condition causes the upper chambers to beat so fast they can no longer pump blood, putting the body at risk for clotting and stroke. Uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart disease are all risk factors that can cause it. So can environmental pollution. That's where firefighters come in. The study, published in the Journal of the "American Heart Association," found that the more fires firefighters respond to, the higher their risk for A-Fib. In fact, after adjusting for risk factors, researchers found a 14% increased risk of A-Fib for every five fires fought each year. KTBS-TV ABC 3 SHREVEPORT CDC: Most Contagious COVID Subvariant Yet Eyed in Up to 70% of New York Area Cases, Nearly 2x US Rate The COVID-19 subvariant estimated by New York state health officials to be even more contagious than the first descendant of the potently infectious omicron strain now accounts for up to 70% of all virus circulating in the region that encompasses the Empire State, according to new CDC data released Tuesday. The prevalence of BA.2.12.1, which health officials say appears to be up to 27% more contagious than BA.2 (which also was said to be more contagious than its predecessor, omicron), in the agency's New York region has been increasing at a far faster rate than nationally, data shows. The CDC puts it at around 62% of COVID cases in the New York region, which for its purposes also includes New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands, though says BA.2.12.1's share of cases could be higher.
