No public drones allowed near wildfires because, 'If You Fly, We Can't' Please pass the word that "If You Fly, We Can't". Areas with wildfires must be a #NoDroneZone so that the helicopters, air tankers and aerial supervisors are able to coordinate an effective initial attack without an incursion into their airspace. A civilian drone spotted at a wildfire effectively brings a temporary halt to the aerial firefight. Pilot and crew safety come first and pilots will land their aircraft at the nearest safe location when an unauthorized drone is spotted. It's that simple – "If You Fly, We Can't". And that can lead to fire spreading and threatening homes, businesses and infrastructure. A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is put in place over an active wildfire area as soon as is feasible and as determined by fire managers and aerial firefighting specialists. General aviation pilots are reminded to check locally and to anticipate TFRs during active or long duration wildfire suppression. AK FIRE INFO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Why do Reno fire investigators prosecute more cases than the national average? VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Reno Fire Department fights hundreds of fires each year. There's a team focused on the dozens of fires that are intentionally set. Arson cases are the least often, least effectively prosecuted criminal offenses in America even though they are the largest dollar loss crime, exceeding burglaries, thefts and armed robberies combined, according to the interFire website. Out of the 250 to 300 fires in Reno each year, about 50 of them are arson. Nationally, the prosecution rate is between 1% and 3% for arson fires. Tray Palmer, the fire marshal for the Reno Fire Department said Reno has a 20% prosecution rate. He says there's a reason the city's rates are higher. The four arson investigators are certified police officers meaning they carry guns and have the ability to make arrests. "They're police officers as well as fire inspectors," said Palmer. KRNV-DT NBC 4 RENO 19 Children, 2 Adults Killed in Texas School Shooting VIDEO: The 18-year-old gunman who slaughtered 19 children and two teachers at a Texas elementary school barricaded himself inside a single classroom and "began shooting anyone that was in his way," authorities said Wednesday in detailing the latest mass killing to rock the U.S. Law enforcement officers eventually broke into the classroom and killed the gunman, who used an AR-style rifle. Police and others responding to Tuesday's attack also went around breaking windows at the school to enable students and teachers to escape, Lt. Christopher Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety said on NBC's "Today" show. The killer "barricaded himself by locking the door and just started shooting children and teachers that were inside that classroom," he said. "It just shows you the complete evil of the shooter." Dillon Silva, whose nephew was in a nearby classroom, said students were watching a movie when a bullet shattered a window. Moments later, their teacher saw the armed assailant walk past the door. KXAS-TV NBC 5 FORT WORTH Related: 27 school shootings have taken place in the US so far this year Duke University Scientists: Silicone Wristbands Track Firefighters' Exposure to Harmful Chemicals Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from the disease than the general adult U.S. population, according to studies by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and other agencies. Recent research by scientists at Duke University could give doctors and public health officials a new tool for tracking firefighters' exposures to cancer-causing chemicals and determining where and when the risks might be greatest. The cool thing is, it's not some expensive high-tech gadget. It's just a silicone wristband, purchased in bulk for about $1 apiece. "It turns out that ordinary silicone wristbands, like the ones sold in stores, absorb the semi-volatile organic compounds you're exposed to while you're out in the world," said Jessica Levasseur, a PhD student at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment, who led the study.
