A joint rescue between Juneau Mountain Rescue and Capital City Fire/Rescue saw an injured hiker brought down safely from a trail on Sunday night. The hiker, a visitor to Juneau, had injured her ankle, but didn't require hospitalization, said CCFR assistant chief Ed Quinto. "Up at Eagle Glacier Trail, two out-of-town couples went out there, and a female ended up injuring her ankle about a mile and half up the trail," Quinto said in a phone interview. One of the group went down and made contact with emergency services, Quinto said, with CCFR eventually dispatched around 6 p.m. on Sunday. "JMR, along with CCFR special teams, went up there and brought her," Quinto said. "We have a good working relationship with JMR. When they're shorthanded, we send them people." JUNEAU EMPIRE More Alaskans are now hospitalized with COVID-19 than at any other time in the pandemic: 152. Hospitals in Southcentral Alaska are in crisis, and the head of the state hospital association wants Gov. Mike Dunleavy to issue a disaster declaration to help ease the pressure. "Unless you have to go to the hospital right now for something, or you're actually in that environment, I don't think you can even begin to comprehend how serious, chaotic and exhausting it is behind the walls right now," said Jared Kosin, chief executive of the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association. Every time he second-guesses himself — is he overstating the crisis? — he gets an email from a doctor or hospital administrator that illustrates how dire the situation is. They are pleading for help, Kosin said. ALASKA PUBLIC MEDIA |

More than 70% of New York City firefighters who responded to scenes following Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks have been diagnosed with 9/11 related physical or mental health conditions, according to a new report. The FDNY's report on the health impacts of rescue and recovery workers found that more than 11,300 members have been confirmed with at least one health condition covered by the World Trade Center Health Program, including asthma, cancers post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse disorder. According to the FDNY, 343 of its members died and nearly 16,000 members responded to the tragic events that day nearly two decades ago, as well as in the following 10 months in the recovery effort. Out of all the related health problems, more than 3,000 firefighters were diagnosed with at least one cancer, the report said. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK VIDEO: The Charlottesville Fire Department has new equipment that can show changes in fire behavior as they happen. Training and EMS Captain Jess Rodzinka says this new training equipment is partially in response to a four percent jump in fires throughout the city, especially in the kitchen. There's been an 85 percent increase in cooking fires. "This will be able to show the newer firefighters, the younger firefighters, essentially how to understand flow-path, how to isolate doors, how to close the fire off, how to slow it down," he said. The box gives firefighters an overview of an incident they just couldn't get when they are inside a building, but it's not just for firefighters. Rodzinka says one safety tip at home before heading to bed could help prevent a bad scenario from getting worse. WCAV-TV CBS 19 CHARLOTTESVILLE VIDEO: The growing vigil for 20-year-old Tiquann "T.J." Davis Jr., near St. Paul's Marshall Avenue bridge, is both a sad and frustrating reminder of what's at stake for the St. Paul Fire Department. "A tragedy occurred here and it's happened in the past," said Steve Sampson, Deputy Chief of Operations for the St. Paul Fire Department. "That is probably the hardest thing for us to grapple with, is the fact that this is preventable." Sampson says Davis and four other young adults were attempting to explore the storm sewer outfall that opens at the Mississippi River early Sunday morning, when a quick moving thunderstorm moved through and put their lives in immediate danger. KARE-TV NBC 11 MINNEAPOLIS New footage of a burning Bolt EV added more fuel to Chevy's raging battery fire saga this week. Early Monday morning, 20-year-old Jesus Damian's 2017 Bolt EV burst into flames while sitting in a parking lot near his apartment in Sacramento, California. The all-electric vehicle was unplugged and off when the fire broke out. The fireball comes after Chevy expanded its recall of Bolts to include every model year earlier this month. The initial recall in November occurred after several reports of battery fires. GM blames battery-maker LG for manufacturing defects. A neighbor who witnessed fire crews putting out the flames sent over a quick video to Damian. The video was taken at 2 a.m. Monday. MASHABLE We've put together a list of TV specials and documentaries commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. This list will update as new programming is announced. 9/11: One Day In America (9 p.m., National Geographic Channel/Hulu) — This new documentary series offers an in-depth and visceral account of Sept. 11 using archival and first-person testimony from first responders and survivors who have now had almost two decades to reflect on the events they lived through. The series, which is the product of a collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, is told only in first-person narrative that chronicles, at times minute-by-minute, the events of that day from the perspectives of those who were there.
