| Senator Murkowski pledges federal support for Ketchikan landslide recovery efforts PHOTOS: U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski stood on Ketchikan's Third Avenue Bypass in a reflective safety vest with local officials. All around her, crews with heavy machinery worked to clear layers of mud and debris from the roadway. She looked up the collapsed slope and down at the devastation below from last week's deadly landslide. "After all these years and nothing happened – you got rain, you got wind – but now all of a sudden, this decides to let loose in a way that is so dramatic," Murkowski said. Local officials and those leading response efforts told Murkowski that the cleanup and geological surveying efforts after the Aug. 25 slide would likely take a long time. The senator said she thinks crews must still be running on adrenaline at this point. "And you know it's probably not going to be until everyone's able to take a deep breath that you begin to feel pretty, pretty low," Murkowski told those leading the clean-up efforts. | VIDEO: Stubborn multi-alarm fire burns through tire shop in New York A stubborn five-alarm fire burned for hours through a tire shop in Jamaica, Queens on Tuesday. Firefighters responded to 150-17 Liberty Ave. around 5:15 p.m. The fire started in the rear of a two-story tire shop where flames were seen billowing 20 feet into the air. Part of the building and roof collapsed. The fire was so hot that the tires inside the building melted, firefighters said. A resident said he felt the heat of the fire from across the street. The workers inside the building all got out safely, firefighters said. Firefighters were concerned about the fire spreading from the melting tires. The firefighters were knee deep in foam, which firefighters used to try and smother the fire. Firefighters at Bonita Springs Fire Control and Rescue District are training up. Jordan Green is the Lieutenant Paramedic and leads operations. He says in the case that someone is stuck in a car, firefighters go through a specific process to safely get them out. "Stress is up for the patient. Stress levels are up for responders as well. That's a big part of why we do this," he said. They are gearing up for the World Rescue Challenge Competition. It's where firefighters from across the world meet up to see who does the best job --- in mock emergencies. They return back here, to Southwest Florida, with new knowledge to implement on the job. Though there have been several tests, Romeo is technically still undiagnosed, but his mother says they are labeling it cerebral palsy. She added that before he caught COVID, Romeo was able to feed himself and use his walker, but after that, things went downhill. "So far, no answers, but it is horrible seeing him going through the process of taking out the blood," Yesenia Pineda said. "But like sometimes I hope I get a relief to see maybe if there is a diagnosis, but if there is no diagnosis, then hopefully in the future, as his doctor says, that something might be discovered to have a diagnosis because there's a lot of tests that are not run because of the technology today."
