Juneau officials address COVID case spike, plans for vaccination clinics after booster approval Juneau continues to struggle to keep up with testing as state public health is still backlogged in processing testing results. According to the State's COVID data hub, 2,865 tests have been conducted in Juneau in the past 7 days, with case positivity standing at 5%. 95 cases were reported over the weekend and Monday, 46 cases were reported Tuesday. Out of both of those case reports, only one non-resident was reported with the cases, all the rest were identified as residents. City Manager Rorie Watt said it is an unchanged situation. "We have too many cases, we continue to have too many cases, and we have got to figure out how to keep our case counts down. Our positivity rates, the rate of testing, it is a high percentage, which tells us not enough testing and too much spread in the community," said Watt. KINY-AM 800 JUNEAU PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Arkansas recycling center 'fully engulfed' after explosive warehouse fire VIDEO: According to the Little Rock Fire Department, the Goldman Recycling building was "fully engulfed" and created a large dark cloud of smoke on Tuesday evening. The recycling center is located at 1701 E. 14th Street. The Little Rock Police Department asked people to avoid the immediate area. Neighboring the recycling center is a Budweiser distribution center. An employee at the distribution center said the fire began around 5 p.m. He said employees began driving trucks out of the parking lot to avoid fire damage. No injuries have been reported. According to the fire department, the fire started in the metals warehouse and propane tanks exploded, which was put out. Due to the fact that a plastic warehouse may have also caught fire, a hazmat team is on the scene to check for any chemicals in the air. KTHV-TV CBS 11 LITTLE ROCK Driver dies after hitting Florida firefighter with pickup truck; Firefighter in critical condition A man is dead after he crashed his pickup truck into two fire trucks, hit a firefighter and finally collided with a fire hydrant. And authorities say they have no idea why he did it. It all started around 3 a.m. Wednesday when first responders got the call of a crash along U.S. 19 at Innisbrook Drive. A sedan had rear-ended another car at the traffic light. Palm Harbor Fire Rescue crews responded to this crash to help the drivers, who both had minor injuries. Two fire trucks blocked the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 as crews worked the crash. A pickup truck driving northbound then collided with both fire trucks, one after the other, for an "unknown reason." After hitting both trucks, the driver continued driving and hit a firefighter who was standing near the two cars from the first crash. After hitting her, the pickup rotated to the outside shoulder and collided with a fire hydrant. WTSP-TV CBS 10 ST. PETERSBURG Squishy robots give Kansas firefighters remote insight during emergencies VIDEO: The Olathe Fire Department is testing out new technology that could help keep firefighters safe. Thanks to a new partnership with Squishy Robotics, the department now has access to three new tensegrity robots that can be used to prevent exposure to hazardous chemicals. The six-month pilot program will allow firefighters to get hands-on experience operating the new technology. Using a drone, firefighters can easily drop the Squishy Robot into spaces it would be unsafe to send a person. Squishy Robots are made of flexible materials that allow it to be dropped from extreme heights. The built-in camera gives a 360 view of an active emergency that first responders can view using a laptop from a distance. Captain Mike Hall with the Olathe Fire Department said the goal is to keep first residents and firefighters safe while collecting real-time information on an active emergency. WDAF-TV FOX 4 KANSAS CITY Wisconsin fire station climbs ladder to State Register of Historic Places PHOTOS: La Crosse Fire Station No. 5 has another claim to fame, in addition to being the last station in the city to use horse brigades: It's now listed on the State Register of Historic Places. The Wisconsin Historical Society, which bestowed the distinction on the station last month, cements the building's heritage as the last surviving firehouse in the city, although it's no longer used as a fire station. The two-story brick structure was built in 1895, according to La Crosse Public Library Archives. Two large doors served as the entry to the large apparatus bay room, where firefighting equipment was housed. The second story originally contained a club room, offices and a dormitory. A rear addition contained stables for the horses and a hayloft. Fire Station No. 5 was built just as La Crosse was transitioning from volunteer fire companies to a professional, paid, city-run fire department, according to the historical society.
