Baltimore has no colleges in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, but that hasn't stopped it from hosting the conference's annual basketball tournament — and reaping the benefits.
Since 2022, the competition for historically Black colleges and universities has generated $81.7 million in economic impact and supported an average of over 1,300 jobs annually. Beyond the CIAA games themselves, the tournament also uplifts Black-owned businesses via complementary events like the Tech Summit House, which highlighted the majority-Black city's innovation economy.
But Baltimore's hosting contract is set to expire in 2026, and and other cities are vying for the opportunity.
