| Good evening, Remember when we were told that come the 21st century our lives would be transformed? There would be much more time for leisure - none of us would be working more than three days a week - and we would all be much healthier because fewer days thinking about work would make us all much less stressed. What happened to that, then? To say we were sold a pup is an understatement. All of us, it seems, are working harder and for longer hours. And even though the statistics tell us that there are lots of jobs out there, it doesn’t seem to mean that working life is getting any easier as companies aim to increase profit margins. That’s tough, even if you enjoy your job... and if you don’t... Today we hear that the number of 999 workers in Lancashire has decreased by nine per cent in the last decade...so it’s hardly surprising ambulance, fire and police response times are all increasing and the public is becoming frustrated. Perhaps we need to accept that if we want better public services, all of us will have to pay more for them. Until next time, take care Gillian | |
