Am I big enough?

Dear John,

Like millions of Americans I have been reflecting on the events in our nation. The inauguration poem by Amanda Gorman inspired me to write a poem as well.

Am I big enough?

The reports are in,

The news is terrible.

Hate, division, despair,

All make life unbearable.

Truth or lie,

Who can tell?

Am I being pushed or pulled

To this new kind of hell?

I can’t take it anymore!

The hypocrisy is unreal.

All confirmed by my own thoughts;

The reflection in the mirror makes it even more surreal.

I have friends from all walks of life,

Silent I remain;

My heart loves them all

And this leads to more strife and pain.

I could take a side

And reject the other,

But I know in my heart

We must love one another.

Am I big enough

To love them all?

Am I big enough

To pick them up when they fall?

“Give me, give me, give me!”

The words echo through the land.

Am I big enough to say

“Forgive me, forgive me, forgive me”?

Am I big enough

To become the person God created me to be?

To serve others with love,

And become the light that they see?

Am I big enough

To love you,

Even when we disagree,

So that I can be the light that you see?

Kindness and mercy and grace and respect,

Powered by enduring love;

Each of these things

Can only be fueled from above.

I am not big enough.

That is a relief!

The One who died for me--

He is enough and the source of my belief.

I am big enough

To become the person God created me to be;

To serve others with love,

And become the light that they see.

I am big enough

When

I become transparent

And you see His light within.

Just a little bit of my heart. I do believe that being big enough is a choice.
