Situational Analysis | Feb. 29, 2024

It's Thursday and National Toast Day.

It's also Leap Day and that means deals. Wendy's is offering free Cinnabon Pull-Aparts, Krispy Kreme is selling a dozen glazed doughnuts tor $2.29 with a purchase of another dozen, Chipotle is giving free guacamole with the code EXTRA24 and if your birthday is today, you can Build-A-Bear for just $4.

Three things to know:

  • SB176 Child Care Services Amendments died on the House floor last night after just 4 minutes of discussion. Sen. Luz Escamilla's bill would have allowed for a pilot childcare program to retrofit vacant state-owned buildings into a licensed childcare facility via a public-private partnership. Prior to dying in the House, the bill had only had 2 no votes along the way.
  • SB195 Golf Course Amendments also failed in the House last night. This bill by Sen. Dan McCay would have made water data from golf courses a protected record under GRAMA. This bill had 9 minutes of discussion and previously had only one no vote.
  • SB205 Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Amendments has passed through the legislature, is fully funded by the Executive Appropriations Committee and is headed to the Governor's desk. This bill is the one that will provide instruction in schools on child sexual abuse and human trafficking.

Protect the freedoms of public employees across Utah by voting NO on H.B. 285.

H.B. 285 creates big government intrusion on private matters, threatens individual agency, and takes away paycheck freedom.  It needlessly increases government red tape and places financial burdens on teachers, firefighters, nurses, police officers, and other public servants.

Quote of the Day

“The world is on fire, literally. You’ve got a war in Europe. You’ve got a war in the Middle East. You’ve got North Korea testing intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of hitting the U.S. You’ve got China doing cyber attacks on our infrastructure in Russia. And Russia is doing blinding satellites that will keep us from saying anything that’s coming or any cyber attacks that they do to us. This is the time when America needs a leader that has moral clarity.”

—Nikki Haley
