Groundbreaking new opera tells tale of Viennese virtuoso dubbed "The Blind Enchantress"

She studied under Salieri, was a muse to Mozart, and her sensational talent captivated the glittering salons of 18th century Europe. So why isn't the story of Maria-Theresia von Paradis more widely known? This April, a bold new opera seeks to reclaim her place in the spotlight.

The Paradis Files is inspired by the extraordinary life and work of the Austrian musician, pianist, and composer who — having lost her sight at an early age — was labelled "The Blind Enchantress" by her contemporaries. It's produced by Graeae, a theatre company comprised of Deaf and disabled artists, and performed alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra, with music by Errollyn Wallen.

A Multi-Faceted Marvel

As The Paradis Files celebrates the phenomenal musical accomplishments of its eponymous heroine, it also explores her experience as a blind woman in 18th-century Europe. In Graeae's retelling, some of those closest to Maria-Theresia seek to profit from her blindness, while others attempt to 'cure' her — but she is far from the tragic figure that they may imagine her to be.

Opera For Everyone

Rather than using an interpreter on the side of the stage, all performances of The Paradis Files creatively integrate British Sign Language, with all seats offering a good view for those who require BSL. The event is captioned and audio description is also available. The theatre-makers themselves have a range of disabilities, including director Sealey, who is Deaf.
