We're coming to you West Belconnen
| 'IWD comes at a pointed time' |
|
International Women’s Day 2021 comes at a very pointed time in this country. Despite all our progress, in recent weeks Australia has been forced to face how little has changed for women - including in their workplaces. It's also prompted me to reflect gratefully on the strong and supportive women I worked for when I was just starting out, who taught me how to do this job. The wonderful former executive producer of the Tasmanian Country Hour, Sally Dakis, was my first boss at the ABC. A veteran of the organisation and a brilliant journalist and broadcaster, Sally taught me so much about the craft of radio and keeping our audience - our community - at the heart of everything we do. When I moved to Canberra to work at Parliament House - also with ABC Rural - I had the great fortune to work for another remarkable editor and mentor, Edwina Farley. Her standards were high and she expected us to meet them, but always supported and encouraged us so we could do exactly that. The example of both these brilliant women - of how to be a journalist and broadcaster, but also a colleague - is something I carry with me every day of my working life. This International Women's Day, I'm thinking about them with gratitude and reflecting on how I can live up to their example.
