With three weeks left to the potential start-date for annexation, Benjamin Netanyahu faces challenges from an unusually broad opposition. Not only the Palestinians (as PLO head negotiator Saeb Erekat writes), including Palestinians who despair of the inaction of the PLO leadership (Bishara Bahbah) but a swathe of two-state Diaspora Jews (see the unprecedented denunciation by major UK Jewish figures) – but also significant parts of the settler camp too (see the pushback by Efrat mayor Oded Revivi).

At the same time, protests over racism and police brutality have gone global, as has the debate over whether now is the time to co-platform the Palestinian experience (George Zeidan)  and the similarities between the two – and their deniers (Joshua Shanes). There are fears that white supremacist provocateurs will try to tip the protests into a race war (Stuart Wexler). As the ‘Send the Troops In’ op-ed by Sen Tom Cotton leads to the NYT opinion editor’s resignation, Jonathan Tobin asks if liberals have given up listening to anyone outside their ideological silo.

The conspiracy theorists are out in full, not least the ever-versatile, and thus dangerous, ‘Soros is behind everything’ trope (Emily Tamkin), and the ‘Antifa is everywhere’ narrative, boosted by the GOP, which poses a particular threat to Jews (Ari Paul).

And coronavirus is still raging in Brazil, where the strange sight of President Jair Bolsonaro hugging Israeli flags as he rails against lockdown and democratic institutions has the country’s Jewish community on edge (Daniel Gouri de Lima) and in Pakistan, there’s a traditional remedy for domestic crises like the pandemic: resuscitating a storied conspiracy theory about a plot by Ahmadi Muslims and Jews to bring down Islam.
