The National Media Awards Foundation showcased the most impactful work published in Canadian periodicals in 2020 at the 44th Annual National Magazine Awards Winners' Celebration hosted by Sandra E. Martin and live-streamed on our website (you can watch the broadcast here). Gold winners in creator-focused categories receive a $1000 cash prize, in addition to their award.
Award Certificates and Seals

Toronto Life is a six-time Gold winner, including for the prestigious Magazine Grand Prix, and a two-time Silver winner.
Katherine Laidlaw is the Gold winner in both Long-Form Feature Writing for “The Long Shadow of Elizabeth Wettlaufer,” published in Chatelaine, and Investigative Reporting for “Heartbreaker,” published in Toronto Life.
Sherina Harris is this year’s Best Emerging Writer for “The Butterfly Effect,” one of five Gold awards The Walrus has received.
Christina Frangou won both Gold and Silver in Feature Writing for “A Whole New Kind of Grief” and “Stealing Time,” both published in Maclean’s.
In total, Maclean’s has won two Gold awards and four Silver awards.
Maclean’s magazine’s “Saving the Right” and The Narwhal’s “Wet'suwet'en matriarchs arrested as RCMP enforce Coastal GasLink pipeline injunction” tied for Silver in the Photo Essay and Photojournalism category.
In a tie for Gold in Personal Journalism are Joshua Whitehead’s “Who Names the Rez Dog Rez?” published in The Malahat Review and Ish Aderonmu’s “They Called Me Prisoner 183645,” published in Toronto Life.
The Malahat Review’s second Gold medal is in the category of One of a Kind Storytelling, for Erin Soros’ “Cord.”
In addition to winning Silver in Long-Form Feature Writing for Susan Nerberg’s “Meltdown,” Broadview is also the Gold winner in Best Magazine: Special Interest.
Dînette is the recipient of two Gold awards, for Lifestyle Photography and the prestigious Best Magazine: Service & Lifestyle.
Inuit Art Quarterly is a two-time Gold winner in the categories of Best Editorial Package and Publisher Grand Prix.
