HR should be prepared to provide employees with information and support regarding student loan repayment as the federal government lifts the pause on payments, say student loan and benefits advisers, who also suggest employers consider offering repayment benefits. "Especially after the repayment restarting and the economy being in a very different place -- things like rent and lettuce cost a lot more than they did a few years ago -- there's a monetary benefit to an employer that offers some kind of student loan support to employees," says Betsy Mayotte, president of the Institute of Student Loan Advisors. A recent survey of 2023 high school graduates conducted by YouScience reveals that a higher percentage of students -- 55% -- are choosing not to pursue a traditional four-year college degree, compared to 48% in 2019-2022. Instead, 69% of respondents are exploring alternative career paths, with 27% attending two-year colleges, 13% entering the workforce directly and 7% enrolling in trade or technical schools. I expected to be lost in much of this conversation, but I wasn’t. It was fascinating! He walked through the history of AI, where we are now in its development and application, and what he envisions happening in the future. He addressed concerns about job displacement and people using AI for bad purposes. His responses were smart, honest and optimistic. He wasn’t doom and gloom or rose-colored-glasses fluffy. His presentation and the questions he took afterward made me think and had me excited to explore more AI tools. Next up is “How industries will be enhanced and tested in the age of AI,” a panel discussion led by Future PLC CEO Jon Steinberg. After that we have a full afternoon of sessions examining AI use in different markets. Tomorrow’s lineup will include a fireside chat on ethics in AI and then sessions looking at more best practices of AI.
