Living a Life of Presence

Each month we will highlight a teaching or practice from Eckhart's featured talk. We encourage you to join us in focusing on this practice for the month.

In this month's featured talk, Eckhart says that if you're very alert, you will notice that in the first two or three seconds of looking at something, you're not actually thinking. Similarly, when we first hear something, for at least the first few seconds, we aren't engaging in conceptual thought. There is simply the perception and our awareness of it.

If we fail to remain alert, mental labels and judgments will soon intrude on the stillness. However, if we can remain aware, Eckhart explains, then something wonderful happens: the initial space expands, and we can be in a state of nonconceptual knowing that is anchored in what he calls "the Deep I," or the dimension of Being. From here, we can act in ways that are truly wise and contributive.

This month, you're encouraged to explore "The Practice of First Perception" as often as you can. Eckhart recommends you begin with simple things such as inanimate objects you encounter all the time. Later, you can experiment with living things—a pet or favorite houseplant, for example. If you're ready for the ultimate challenge, try this practice with the people in your life.

Eckhart cautions that after three or four seconds of perceiving something or someone, you may find your thinking mind compelling you to interpret and comment on things. The goal is to observe this tendency even as you continue your practice, allowing what arises and not seeking to control your experience. With practice, you'll get more skilled at "catching the initial moment," and you'll find those first few seconds begin to grow in duration.
