If you told a young Jim Dreyer he’d grow up to be a long-distance swimmer, he’d have never believed you. He spent half his life terrified of open water after a near drowning experience in his early childhood. At age 32, he took beginner’s swimming lessons. To say he’s faced his fears would be an understatement. Jim’s crossed all five Great Lakes, setting world records along the way. And at age 61, he’s still not finished. His latest challenge is Grand Haven to Milwaukee — his longest swim yet. “The Shark” embodies perseverance. But what keeps him going? Arctic blast to hit by Thanksgiving night, West Michigan could see inches of snow pile up |
A real taste of winter is coming: A blast of Arctic air will bring down our daytime high temperatures below freezing beginning on Friday, and several inches of lake-effect snow could start accumulating in West Michigan, and even on the east side of the state, according to the National Weather Service. The lake-effect snow could ebb a bit on Saturday, but we’re expected to see another uptick in snow on Sunday or Monday. Retirement: 13 ON YOUR SIDE’s longest-serving meteorologist is saying farewell after 44 years on the air. George Lessens will say goodbye to viewers with one final newscast at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27. No injuries reported: Several homes were damaged in an explosion at a General Motors facility in Michigan. Michigan State Police in Brighton were among those who responded to the scene at the Milford Proving Grounds on General Motors Road in Milford at 9 a.m. on Monday. |

Judge to consider Michigan school shooter’s request for new sentence |
Pending decision: A Michigan judge is considering whether to reverse Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley’s guilty plea. Defense attorneys argue that Crumbley was in poor mental health when he accepted the sentence and waived his right to trial, and said new evidence of his volatile childhood and exposure to alcohol should have been considered in the sentencing determination, according to the Associated Press. Appears to be no barrier: Mark Brant, reelected Nov. 5 as a Monroe County commissioner, soon will be off to federal prison. The Republican said he has no plans to resign and will collect a roughly $15,000 salary. Speaking of politics: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is on a trade mission this week in Spain to spur foreign investments in the state. |

Michigan steps back from developing 1,400-acre rural megasite |
No longer pursuing: The Michigan Economic Development Corp. and the Lansing Area Economic Partnership put together a 1,400-acre megasite in Eagle Township to attract a largescale, job-creating investment. But after facing community pushback, it’s been halted. Ann Arbor's Downtown Development Authority have explored the idea of pedestrian malls as part of a downtown circulation study that kicked off last year and is now winding down. But among the many draft recommendations to come out of the study, pedestrian malls aren’t on the list. While we're in town: Attorneys representing about 3,600 University of Michigan tenured professors filed a lawsuit against the university Tuesday, seeking backpay from the last three years. |

Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown, David Montgomery expected to play vs. Bears |
Gearing up for the holiday game: Amon-Ra St. Brown and David Montgomery are trending in the right direction for the Detroit Lions. But the team isn’t as optimistic about Taylor Decker, Kalif Raymond or Carlton Davis III’s status for Thanksgiving against the Chicago Bears. A whole new world: The Lions (10-1) are the top team in the NFC and can punch their postseason ticket with a win -- and a whole bunch of help later this week -- over the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. For a franchise that has spent most of its existence fighting for their lives this time of year, it’s another reminder of how far Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have taken them in three short years. Reports have surfaced that free-agent quarterback Daniel Jones is weighing his options with several teams interested in signing him for the rest of the season, but it’s unclear if the Detroit Lions will be one of them. |

Historic farmhouse opens for new Christmas tour, illuminated hike |
Holidays on the Farm: A new Christmas event is coming to the Lakeshore at one of Holland’s longest standing pieces of history. The Van Raalte Farm Park is opening its doors to guests this winter as it is transformed into a winter wonderland inside and out. The Waterloo Farm Museum finalized renovations to its historic bakehouse and brick oven in October, allowing guests to step back into 19th-century pioneer life and bake goodies onsite. Scut and Grover: The two bullies from the holiday classic, “A Christmas Story,” are coming to Michigan for a screening of the film. |
