The results are in! In an effort led by prep sports reporter Steve Kaminski, MLive developed a formula in 2015 to determine which Michigan high school athletic department had the best school year, based on how teams finished in all MHSAA sanctioned state tournaments. Kaminski passed away in December 2022, but his legacy and dedication to high school sports live on in the continuation of the Ultimate State Champion project. Click here for a breakdown of the top 20 finishers in the 2023-24 Ultimate State Champion standings. |

Are Michigan’s mobile home parks up next for energy-efficiency protections? |
Keeping an eye on it: Michigan’s trailer courts could become the next battleground for energy-efficiency protections. This comes after the state just enshrined energy-efficiency measures for homeowners who live under rules imposed by homeowners’ associations. The Homeowners’ Energy Policy Act will take effect in October. The effort was the latest energy reform codified into state law. This recent change in law prevents HOAs from blocking its members from installing a wide range of energy efficiency measures at their residences. Officials said residents of mobile home communities might be able to receive similar legal protections. More in public interest: Two hospitals are tied for the best in Michigan, according to U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings for 2024-25. University of Michigan Health-Ann Arbor and Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak both ranked No. 1. |

Ready for a break in humidity? It’s coming in a big way, but for how long? |
Embrace it: Michigan has been in sticky humid weather for several days now. There’s a big change coming over the next few days, and you’ll be able to enjoy it for several days. With a series of two cold fronts moving south through Michigan, our meteorologist is calling it a six-day break in high humidity starting today and ending Tuesday morning. Adding up: Another round of heavy rain in severe storms hit far southern Michigan Monday night. The overnight rain combined with several other rounds of heavy rain is pushing some southern Michigan areas to a very heavy monthly rain amount. Here are some of the exact rainfall totals from rain gauges across the southern half of Lower Michigan. Don't forget to look up: The Perseid meteor shower officially began July 15. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this is the best meteor shower of the year with up to 90 meteors per hour during peak nights. From tonight until its peak, a few meteors are still possible in the night sky. |
