Some fear out-of-state students are swelling the ranks at LSU

BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer

Out-of-state students are swelling the ranks at LSU. The number of undergrads from other states nearly tripled over the past 10 years, exceeding 12,000 students in 2024.

By contrast, the number of Louisiana undergrads inched up only 2%, to some 20,300 students.

The out-of-staters pay much higher tuition, but some fear they may be crowding out Louisiana students. Last year, LSU gave about $80 million in scholarships to out-of-state students.

Staff writer Mark Ballard notes the decision could shape politics in Louisiana for years to come. It also could dictate how other states balance the requirements of the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause.
