Decisions about your health are important, including decisions about whether to use complementary health approaches. Here are some points to think about:

  • Be an informed consumer. Find out and consider what scientific studies have been done on the safety and effectiveness of the approach that interests you.
  • If you plan to consult a complementary health practitioner, such as an acupuncturist or massage therapist, choose carefully, just as you would when selecting a conventional health care provider.
  • Before using any dietary supplement or herbal product, find out about potential side effects, including interactions with medications that you take.
