Sometimes research uncovers facts that are obvious to everyone. “Study finds most people think chocolate tastes good.” “New research shows sleeping only four hours a night is bad for your health.” Thank you, Captain Obvious. I’m putting the latest research from Lifeway in that category: “Long Sermons Seem Longer in the Pews, Study Finds.” Yeah, no kidding. According to the study, “churchgoers are six times more likely than preachers to say that their church’s typical sermon goes over an hour.” Commenting on the finding, Daniel Silliman writes, “Time, it seems, moves differently in pulpit and pew.” But he provides a little historical perspective, noting that some sermons by the Reformers clocked in at three hours! If you’re a preacher, I’d recommend not going quite that long. Speaking of sermons, if you’re interested in improving your craft (so your sermons don’t seem so long) check out our resource: Developing Your Preaching and Teaching Style. This 17-page resource has articles that offer insights and practices to help you find and develop the unique voice God has given you so you can use your gifts to their fullest potential. |
