Potential developer of new LSU arena named in federal indictment

BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer

LSU wants to build a new arena on campus and has identified the developer it wants to handle the job. Now, the CEO of that company has been named in a federal indictment over the bidding process for the construction of the Moody Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Oak View Group founder and CEO Timothy J. Leiweke has been indicted by a federal grand jury "for orchestrating a conspiracy to rig the bidding process," the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.

LSU leaders have pointed to the Moody Center as their inspiration for the new arena.

The university has estimated a $400 million price tag for the project, and has considered locating it on public land at the LSU Golf Course. One of the architects of the plan did not answer questions Wednesday about how the indictment would affect the LSU arena project.

Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Caleb Eisworth was critically injured in June when his motorcycle was rammed by a pickup truck — an incident authorities say was intentional. This week, the longtime veteran of the department had both of his legs amputated above his knees, an operation his family says seems to have improved his chances of recovery.

"Almost immediately" after the procedure, Eisworth's vitals improved to their best levels since he was rushed to the hospital after the crash, his family reports.
