We've finally made it to the end of another week. There are plenty of fun events to attend this weekend across Michigan, including several festivals. ArtPrize, the annual international, interactive art competition held in Grand Rapids returns today and runs until Sept. 28. Over the next 15 days, visitors can partake in free guided tours, art workshops, patronize 165 vendors, vote for their favorite entry and more. If you plan on attending, here's your guide to the festivities. Join thousands of festival-goers at the 52nd annual St. John Applefest in Fenton. Attendees can enjoy carnival rides, an apple pie eating contest and more until Sunday. Head to Kalamazoo on Saturday to join the Recovery Institute of Southwest Michigan and other local service providers for the 10th annual Wellness and Recovery Festival. |

Arnold Transit Company is reborn as one Mackinac ferry service rebrands, hires new leader |
New beginnings: The Arnold Transit Company is being reborn on the Straits as the Mackinac Island Ferry Company rebrands itself with the moniker of one of the area’s original passenger service fleets. The company also announced new leadership, with a well-respected island captain and business owner Veronica Dobrowolski taking the helm as president. Possible development: A shuttered railroad tunnel beneath I-196 in downtown Grand Rapids would be transformed into a colorful, bright pedestrian walkway under a plan from Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. Out of business: The doctors and staff at Women’s OB-GYN in Saginaw Township have announced the practice is permanently, closing after 74 years. The practice will continue to see patients until the end of October. |

Ex-Michigan governors Engler, Blanchard part of group to defend election integrity |
In politics: A new, bipartisan group of former Michigan governors are working together to instill confidence in the state’s elections system at a time, they say, when that trust has significantly eroded. Former Michigan Govs. John Engler, a Republican, and Jim Blanchard, a Democrat, along with former Democratic Lt. Gov. John Cherry and former Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop currently make up the group. Save the date: Former President Donald Trump will participate in a town hall-style gathering in Flint on Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Republican’s campaign officials said. Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump’s former press secretary during his time as president, will moderate the event. Campaign trail: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz visited Grand Rapids Thursday evening as part of Vice President Kamala Harris’ “New Way Forward” battleground tour to mobilize support in swing states. |

Residents can give input on big Michigan high-voltage power line projects. Here’s how |
Weighing in: For the first time in a half century, new high-voltage power lines are set to cross into Michigan, snaking up the center of the state. As a pair of major transmission line projects seek approval from state regulators, residents have another chance to give input. The Michigan Public Service Commission has scheduled a virtual public hearing on the proposed lines from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3. A Canadian pipeline company attempting to build an oil pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac will re-apply for a state permit to build in protected coastal wetlands following the dismissal of a legal challenge. Up North: Oak wilt, a lethal fungal infection which spreads via root systems, was found in two tree stands in southwest Marquette County in August, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced Thursday, Sept. 12. The confirmed detections are mostly in Ely Township northwest of Tibbetts Lake, about 25 miles from the nearest previously known infections in southern Iron County. |

Michigan State could be biggest favorite in nearly 10 years on Saturday |
Game day: Michigan State came home from its Week 2 game at Maryland last weekend in good spirits after a 27-24 win. Now it will spend Week 3 being as big of a betting favorite in nearly a decade. According to OddsShark, Michigan State hasn’t been favored by 40 points in a game since Sept. 20, 2014, when it closed -43.5 against Eastern Michigan. The team is set to face off against Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. In the know: The Wolverines look to relaunch another streak this Saturday against the visiting Arkansas State Red Wolves. It will also mark the last game of the non-conference season, as the conference season starts Sept. 21 against Southern California. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming game. Lions legend: Hall of Fame linebacker Joe Schmidt, who played a key role in the Detroit Lions’ success during two of their four NFL championships, died Wednesday, his family told the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was 92. |

$1.2 million, kilo of cocaine seized in Grand Rapids police raid |
Drug bust: Police seized nearly $1.2 million and more than a kilogram in cocaine from a home in what authorities said could be the largest cash seizure of its kind in Grand Rapids police history. Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said the seizure would mark a “significant disruption” in the local drug trade. Bomb hoax: Prosecutors have charged a Harrison Township man with false report or threat of terrorism after he allegedly strapped a pair of propane tanks to his car in order to avoid repossession. Seeking damages: A Saginaw man has filed a lawsuit against a local hospital where he used to work, alleging two female coworkers spent years racially and sexually harassing him. When he repeatedly brought his complaints to his superiors, they brushed him aside and eventually fired him, he alleges. |
