NEW YORK, NY.- About a year before she died of cancer, in 2004, at the age of 58, artist Pacita Abad and a team painted a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Singapore River with exuberant colors and more than 2,000 circles. Surrounded by ho-hum hotels and apartment buildings, it radiates joy. LONDON.- Disappointed Love, painted in 1821 by Irish artist Francis Danby, is a scene of eternal teenage wistfulness, its visual codes as readable now as they were back then. A young girl sits by a river, tearful and heartbroken, her head in her hands, her white dress pooling around her legs. In the water, pages of a torn letter float among the waterlilies. By her side are props of femininity: a straw bonnet, a bright red shawl and a miniature portrait of the man who wronged her. The work ... More | |

And because she was a real-life cowgirl who rode in that saddle while producing ... More |

Sophia Roe's charm earringNEW YORK, NY.- There are certain rules that Sophia Roe cant seem to shake from her years working in restaurants: short nails, no nail polish, a separate sink to wash her hands. But when the James Beard Award-winning chef is cooking for her half a million Instagram followers in her Brooklyn culinary studio, Apartment Miso, Roes approach is more relaxed. When Im in my studio, this is my space to spiritually take my shirt off, wear what I want, she said. If that means I want to wear five earrings and a hat and rings on every finger when I cook, I do it. In an interview that has been edited and condensed Roe talks about one charm-covered earring that serves as a wearable expression of who she is and a representation of the people who matter to her. Q: Tell me about your earring. A: The earring itself is a Yona Kohen earring. Its just this ... More At 95, he has learned how to use nostalgiaNEW YORK, NY.- Stan Herman, New Yorks godfather of fashion, knows what makes life worth living for. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. I wake up each day with a sense of expectation. Once you lose that, you grow old. Ive signed new contracts, I have new work, and with those things come new expectations. Do I ask myself, Should we do another account? Often the answer is yes. I never expect things to end. People say, Oh, youve got so much energy. Energy is expectations, challenges, moving forward. Nostalgia can be wonderful, of course, so long as you dont abuse it. Its great for a memoir. Having written one, Im so much more aware of my life at this point. Its all bubbling to the surface. I think now that I would love to have lived in the 1910s, the 20s and 30s in Europe. Thats where my heart is its Zurich, its Munich, ... More A Salzburg Festival tradition deserves a wider audienceSALZBURG.- The Salzburg Festival attracts an audience of music and theater lovers from around the world. Yet its oldest tradition is a surprisingly local one. In 1920, director Max Reinhardt and writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal inaugurated the first Salzburg Festival with an outdoor production of Jedermann, an adaptation of a medieval morality play. The performance took place on the square in front of Salzburgs imposing Baroque cathedral. Jedermann quickly became a festival fixture. Since the end of World War II, it has been performed here every summer, often with German-speaking acting luminaries tackling the title role of a wealthy and impious bon vivant who, in the prime of life, gets an unexpected visit from death. Faced with his mortality, the title character, whose name translates as Everyman, learns how fleeting fortune ... More Dance leads the way as art meets sport at the Cultural OlympiadNEW YORK, NY.- In dance and in sports, there is a common ritual: warming up. As much an art as an activity, it energizes not just the body, but also the mind, speaking less to effort than to surrender. What does it take to get into the zone, that place where the body and mind show up as equals? Since 2022 France has been warming up on a grand scale. Culture, along with sport and education, is a pillar of Olympism, and France has taken that seriously with its Cultural Olympiad, a program of multidisciplinary arts events directed by Dominique Hervieu, a choreographer, an experienced leader in the arts and a former dancer as well. The thread running through this Olympiad is the connection between sports and art. When do they find symbiosis? When do they diverge? As Hervieu sees it, what binds the Olympic Games is culture, and there, ... More Looking for the best in Black cinema? Try Brown Sugar.NEW YORK, NY.- As the name-brand streaming services struggle to show profits and broker cable-esque bundling packages to cut costs, the most successful streamers are proving to be niche services, which curate specialized libraries for a specific target audience. Weve spotlighted several such streamers in this space, most of them focusing on clearly defined genres or sensibilities; this month, we look at a service with an eye on one particular culture. Brown Sugar, which started in 2016, promises on its site hit movies and TV shows along with the largest collection of classic Black cinema, uncut and commercial-free. Its library features programming about the Black experience, predominantly by Black creators, and aimed primarily at Black audiences (while recognizing that those audiences are seeking all sorts of entertainment). ... More Cheng Pei Pei, 'queen' of Kung Fu cinema, dies at 78NEW YORK, NY.- Cheng Pei Pei, a star of two of the most beloved kung fu movies of all time, âCome Drink With Meâ and âCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,â died Wednesday at her home in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was 78. Her representatives at Echelon Talent Management confirmed her death in a statement. She was diagnosed in 2019 with a neurodegenerative disease similar to Parkinsonâs, they said. Cheng was widely known as the âQueen of Swordsâ in 1960s Hong Kong for her graceful, steely performances in kung fu movies, showing off delicacy and self-control she had gained during girlhood training in ballet. She first gained prominence as the lead star of âCome Drink With Meâ (1966), directed by King Hu and produced by Shaw Brothers Studio. That film âopened a new chapter in the history of Asian action movies,â thank ... More 'Time Bandits' review: A flatter adventureNEW YORK, NY.- When the bandits of the title burst into the bedroom of Kevin, an 11-year-old history buff, in the new Apple TV+ series âTime Bandits,â among the first things you are likely to notice is: no dwarfs. The showâs source, Terry Gilliamâs 1981 movie of the same title, was all about the dwarfs. There were six of them, who pilfered a map that identifies time portals and used it to try to steal whatever historical loot they could get their hands on. Along the way, they picked up Kevin, who came to serve as both the brains and the conscience of the operation. The bandits in Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititiâs âTime Bandits,â which premieres Wednesday with two of its 10 episodes, are a fully heighted bunch; their more-or-less leader, Penelope, is played by Lisa Kudrow, who towered over her female co-stars on âFriends.â Changing things up after 43 years is unremarkable, ...
