Karma opens an exhibition of works by Marley Freeman | | When examined more closely, antiquities reveal how incredibly advanced many ancient cultures were | | Quinn's June 6 Fine & Decorative Arts Auction: A capital collection of art, silver & style |
Marley Freeman, sublimely unempathetic, 2025. Oil and acrylic on linen, 28 x 30 in.
NEW YORK, NY.- no when presents a selection of intuitively generated and yet tightly composed paintings by Marley Freeman made in the past two years. The artist found her way to painting through a deep knowledge of pattern, texture, and color cultivated during early experiences with glass mosaic and textile productionthe latter at her family business and then an archive connected to a jacquard and dobby mill. Building on the resulting knowledge that flat media have their own architectures, Freemans recent oil and acrylic paintings are at once process-based and concerned with the structural qualities of two-dimensionality. These works are driven by her investigation into, as the artist puts it, how abstractions can act like images. Working simultaneously across an array of sizes in both her New York and Massachusetts studios, she moves fluidly from canvas to canvas. Each work is both question and answer; she resolves her initial marks in a process of painterly ... More | |

HARWICH, UK .- Who isnt fascinated by relics from civilizations that flourished thousands of years ago? While at first glance some might seem quite primitive and far-removed from present-day art and objects, a closer look reveals quite another story. Often, they show levels of sophistication and imagination that were highly advanced for their time. Here are three items chosen at random from an auction coming up on June 3-7 in England, along with a taste of their back stories. They may change your perception of certain societies of the Mediterranean and Near East, which were actually quite advanced and innovative. Thanks to The Rosetta Stone, which was discovered in 1799 during Napoleons Egyptian campaign, archaeologists were able to decipher hieroglyphics that had remained a mystery for several millennia. Annegret Soltau, Zerbrochenes Lachen, 3, 1978. Photo etching, printed by the artist, 11 pieces, each 13 x 13 cm. Unique.
FRANKFURT.- After nearly 30 years of collaboration with Annegret Soltau, we are delighted that her radical pioneering work on sensitive themes surrounding womanhood is finally receiving the attention that the art world often denied her at the time of its creation. The exhibition ON THE ETCH is dedicated to the etchings and photo etchings Annegret Soltau created between 1973 and 1982. Since her studies, Soltau worked with etching and often chose aquatint a technique that allows for fine gradation of surfaces and is particularly well-suited to the representation of corporeality. The artist first etched her plates and then reworked them to achieve tonal values and plasticity. Themes such as identity, the body, femininity, and pain have preoccupied the artist to this day and find their origins in her early etchings, some of which are being shown for the first time in this exhibition. It was the artists intention to make representation ... More |

More October Gallery presents major Aubrey Williams solo show, exploring decades of abstract masteryLONDON.- October Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Aubrey Williams, comprising a selection of significant paintings, spanning the decades between the 1960s and 1980s. This exhibition explores Williams painterly techniques, investigating his highly individual approach. His intense works draw from a broad range of influential artists, particularly Arshile Gorky, one of the precursors of Abstract Expressionism and Wifredo Lam, who references African motifs and Afro-Caribbean culture; as well as the abstracted, energetic excitement of the New York School. Yet, Williams work can be viewed as a uniquely evolved expression of abstraction and a powerful contribution to post-war art. In displaying his intuitive grasp of the possibilities open to abstraction, these striking works deploy an entirely original use of colour. The range of paintings underline the breadth of Williams interests: ecology, ...
