(Roger Kisby/The New York Times) by Adam Nagourney NEW YORK, NY.- Romeo, devastated and bereft, gazed over Juliets lifeless body, lying atop a table in a rehearsal studio at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts here. But rather than offer a farewell soliloquy before taking his own life, in this adaptation of the Shakespeare play, Romeo broke into song, the lyrics familiar to any rock music fan who grew up in 1980s. We belong to the light We belong to the thunder We belong to the sound of the words Weve both fallen under. Sitting behind a table as she observed this first full rehearsal, Pat Benatar, who sang We Belong a touchstone of the MTV era that reached No. 5 on the Billboard chart in 1984 stopped taking notes and began to cry. ... More News | Almine Rech opens George Rouy's first solo show with the gallery PARIS.- Almine Rech is presenting George Rouy's first solo show with the gallery, on view from November 26 to December 22, 2022. Recent theories suggest that our gut commonly thought of as merely a collection of unsavoury organs may function as a regulator of our emotions, alongside the brain. In every language, however, many idioms express conflict or discomfort: a knot in your stomach, gut-wrenching, and gnawed from the inside George Rouy has portrayed such images in his paintings for many years. The belly not only affects our psyche but also is the origin of childbirth, where creation takes place. Rouy is eager to reaffirm this, loud and clear: in his mind, to paint is to give birth. The artwork thus takes on the same eminently intimate character as the body itself. The painting is revealed like an experience told, a state of health and consciousness in a particular moment. ... For Star Power Uddoh continues her investigation of Black representation in history and popular culture. Through a series of new collages, an interactive installation and a fifty-five minute long film, the artist discusses what it means to make history and to be excluded from it, and the impact this has on ones self-esteem and personal development. The works in Star Power are populated by a multitude of figures that oscillate between being symbolic representations of historical and religious characters and real people with lived experiences. It is at this threshold that Uddohs ... More 'Drum Listens to Heart': Images, words and sculptures, bound by a beat SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The curator Anthony Huberman was already toying with the idea of an exhibition about percussion when, in 2020, people in cities around the world started banging pots and pans outside their windows. This nightly ritual, meant as a gesture of support for health care workers during the pandemic, poignantly confirmed something, for Huberman, about percussion in all its forms: It can mark a protest as well as a celebration, communal cohesion as well as individual dissent. Soon after, people across the nation were beating drums at demonstrations against police violence toward Black people. His plans for the exhibition quickly swelled in scope and urgency. Percussion reaches far beyond the drum, Huberman wrote in his exhibition guide. Drum Listens to Heart is the title of Hubermans ambitious, three-part exhibition at the California College of the Arts Wattis ... | PhotoGalleries Terms of Belonging You Ni Chae The seduction of beauty Mehmet Sinan Kuran Flashback On a day like today, French painter Georges Seurat was born December 02, 1859. Georges-Pierre Seurat (2 December 1859 - 29 March 1891) was a French post-Impressionist painter and draftsman. He is noted for his innovative use of drawing media and for devising the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism. Seurat's artistic personality was compounded of qualities which are usually supposed to be opposed and incompatible: on the one hand, his extreme and delicate sensibility; on the other, a passion for logical abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of mind.
