Matthew Eisman / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / AFP. NEW YORK (AFP).- Peter Tork, the offbeat folk artist who found fame with 1960s pop band the Monkees, has died, his team announced Thursday. He was 77 years old. "It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world," the team posted on his official Facebook page, without specifying a cause of death. The musician in 2009 had been diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that affected his tongue. "There are no words right now...heart broken over the loss of my Monkee brother," tweeted drummer-singer Micky Dolenz, one of the band's two surviving members. ... More | | Luca Pacioli (1447-1517). Paciolis book, published in 1494, codified the mathematical foundations of our modern and technological world. Pacioli was among the earliest to recognize the study of economics as a liberal art and this work is the first practical how-to book on succeeding in business. The Summa ... More | | Installation view. VIENNA.- Flying High is the first exhibition that is devoted globally to female positions in Art Brut produced from 1860 until the present. The exhibition flies high in every sense: it has gathered together 316 works by 93 women artists from 21 countries, which in many aspects of content and aesthetics challenge our idea of what art is. The exhibition adopts the term Art Brut raw art or outsider art defined by Jean Dubuffet in 1945 as starting point for the primordial, non-academic art produced outside the cultural mainstream. The diversity and heterogeneity of the works being presented in the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien demonstrate clearly that the scope of the Art Brut concept today has over time encompassed far more than works of the mentally ill; it also includes the production of mediumistic (spiritualist) women ... Image: Courtesy Michael Werner Gallery, New York and London. NEW YORK, NY.- Michael Werner Gallery, New York is presenting Jörg Immendorff: Questions from a Painter Who Reads. This exhibition of paintings is a visual history of one of the most important artists to emerge from post-war Germany and spans four decades of the artists career from 1974 to 2007. Jörg Immendorff (1945-2007) is known for an oeuvre that challenged both artistic and political establishments, all with a particular focus on the role of the artist in contemporary society and within history at large. The title of this exhibition, taken from a 1980 painting, recalls a 1935 poem by Bertolt Brecht called Questions from a Worker Who Reads, which asks if ancient victories were the result of a single hero or a legion of unacknowledged supporters. The exhibition begins in the 1970s, when Immendorff grew disillusioned with politics and increasingly dissatisfied with his role as an artist and sought to produce ... More |

NEW YORK, NY.- David Zwirner is presenting an exhibition organized by Robert Storr that examines the mind and career of R. Crumb. The exhibition features a wide array of printed matter culled from the artists archive: tear sheets of drawings and comics, taken directly from the publications where the works first appeared, as well as related ephemera. These often fragile works on paper have been installed across the walls of the gallerys 519 West 19th Street space in New York. Further illuminating Crumbs practice, the show also features a selection of rare sketchbooks and original drawings by the artist. Instrumental in the formation of the underground comics scene in the 1960s and 1970s, Crumb has helped challenge and expand the boundaries of the graphic arts and redefined comics and cartoons as countercultural art forms. | More News | Former Welsh keeper consigns Gordon Banks' England match-worn shirt for auction at Ewbank's On February 28, Ewbanks Auctions are to offer for sale an international goalkeepers shirt worn by the late great Gordon Banks (1937-2019). Consigned by Dave Hollins, the Wales keeper in the same match, with whom Banks swapped the shirt at the end of the game, it comes from the October 12, 1963 British Championship fixture between Wales and England at Ninian Park, Cardiff, three years before Banks completed a golden run at the World Cup for champions England, starting every game. Alf Ramseys team, under the captaincy of Jimmy Armfield, put four goals past Hollins, two from the boot of Bobby Smith and one each from Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton, in front of a 48,000 strong crowd. Wales failed to score. Although he had played for the Wales under-23 team before, this was Hollins debut for the main side. We had quite a forceful ... More Beck & Eggeling opens "Dessau Files" with photographs by Joachim Brohm VIENNA.- Brohm uses imagery and stylistic devices that transcend the documentary medium to examine the differences in appearance of some of the iconic Bauhaus buildings. A century after the founding of the Bauhaus, these buildings are in varying stages of preservation and conservation, restoration and renovation, demolition, rebuilding, interpretation, and even reinterpretation. In what way does our approach to this cultural heritage change our perception of it? »Dessau Files« brings together a selection of different images from three groups of works photographed at different times in Dessau by the German artist. Although created independently of each other, the projects are linked thematically and by their location. Brohm has focused on Dessau as a unique modernist space since 1990. The few remaining masters houses, built ... More The A arte Invernizzi gallery opens a solo exhibition of works by Niele Toroni MILAN.- The A arte Invernizzi gallery opened a solo exhibition of works by Niele Toroni (Muralto-Locarno, 1937). The works on display enter into a dialogue with the exhibition spaces, and the underlying concept is based on the number twenty-five. Niele Toroni has been working since 1967 with a precise methodology that involves creating a sequence of imprints on a variety of supports. The imprints are made by a no. 50 brush and are placed 30 cm apart. Each one is the place of an epiphany, revealing a constant metamorphosis of the artists action over time. Niele Toroni has been repeating his brush imprints in time and space. But it is never the same thing because the same is the same is the same, and it is obstinately dissociated from bring identical. More 'Roma' star's unlikely road from mountains of Mexico to Hollywood TLAXIACO (AFP).- Yalitza Aparicio once was a newly qualified pre-school teacher living in a dusty mountain town in Mexico. Now, the 25-year-old is the star of Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" and an Oscar nominee -- a fairy tale marred by racist barbs the indigenous actress has encountered along the way. Aparicio -- who is part Mixtec and part Triqui -- grew up in Tlaxiaco in the southern state of Oaxaca, home to about 40,000 people. She had never even seen a movie on the big screen until she was 15 and went on a school trip to Puebla, a city some 350 kilometers (220 miles) away. Tlaxiaco closed its only movie theater years ago, explains Miguel Angel Martinez, who runs the small city's tiny cultural center. Even then, it had only shown films that had screened everywhere else years before. The theater's demise was hastened by the advent of pirated DVDs, a flourishing ... More Exhibition is fruit of 8 years of research about a brutalist building located in Zikhron Ya'akov TEL AVIV.- The Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv presents Ilit Azoulays newest exhibition, Regarding Silences, which is the culmination of eight years of research and production. Azoulay is known for using thousands of high definition macro photographs to create surreal composite images. Using her signature technique for this project, she painstakingly catalogued the renovation of an emblematic Brutalist building situated in northern Israel, in the process uncovering complex layers of history. Built in 1968 by Yaakov Rechter as a convalescent home for workers, the award-winning building, a masterpiece of Brutalist architecture, was converted over nine years into an art-oriented luxury hotel. However, beyond being a physical manifestation of the Israeli economys transition from socialist to capitalist, the building betrays a hidden past as an interrogation ... The Asian Arts auction, with nearly 400 lots, will present works from China, Korea, Southeast Asian and the Middle East, that span a period of over 5000 years, including fine ceramics, furniture, textiles, jades, bronzes, and more. Among the sales highlights is a group of painted and glazed pottery sculptures and vessels from various owners, dating from the Neolithic period to the Ming dynasty. Lot 3 (estimate: $8,000-12,000) is an excellent example of a Neolithic (circa 1500 B.C.) painted grey pottery tripod vessel from the inner Mongolian Xiajiadian culture, whose dark body contrasts with the orange and white floriform motifs painted on the body. He has set aside his signature process of collaging cut and painted sections of paper over linen, and has turned his attention entirely to oil painting. The new paintings follow from a framework that defined his 2016 show here, in which musings on modernist architecture were realized in a series that included both collaged paintings and oil paintings. Those oils of silhouetted shapes were followed by an intermediate body of work in which the boundaries of the shapes were penetrated by patterns of bands, circles and grids. This is the first solo exhibition for the artist at the gallery. A key figure in American art during the postwar era, Saul Steinberg was an explorer of a changing artistic and social landscape. He became notorious in popular culture with his illustrative covers for the New Yorker, where he was a contributor for more than 50 years. Beyond this, the art he made throughout his lifetime was philosophical and poetic, as well as painterly. Refusing to kowtow to formalist norms, he crafted a rich visual idiom that eschewed conventional categories and radiated a wistful humor. In untitled, the ink on paper drawing The Killer (1966) showcases the ease with which Steinberg communicates a metaphysical theme rooted in comedy. Literalizing the activity of thought, the drawing uses ... More
