SAN SEBASTIÃN.- Chillida Leku will open its doors to the public on Wednesday 17th April, inviting audiences to experience this important cultural site in the Basque Country. The museum, comprising a sculpture park and exhibition space inside a converted sixteenth century farmhouse, was founded by Eduardo Chillida in 2000. It has been open by appointment only since 2011. The inaugural exhibition, entitled Eduardo Chillida. Echoes, features works from throughout Chillidas career dating from the late 1940s through to 2000. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Estate of Dan Flavin and is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that includes an essay by the esteemed Italian art critic Germano Celant. The American artist Dan Flavin (19331996) is internationally renowned for his installations and sculptural works made exclusively of commercially available fluorescent light. LONDON.- Today sees the launch of Art UKs unique sculpture project. The first thousand sculptures are now available online, free of charge, to people in the UK and all over the globe via www.artuk.org. An estimated 150,000 more will follow by the end of 2020. These first images, and their associated digital records, form part of the largest sculpture cataloguing project ever undertaken in the UK. Most sculptures in the national collection have never been photographed before. By the projects conclusion, the UK will become the first country in the world to create a free-to-access online photographic showcase of its publicly owned sculpture, for everyones enjoyment, learning and research. NEW YORK (AFP).- Peter Tork, the offbeat folk artist who found fame with 1960s pop band the Monkees, has died, his team announced Thursday. He was 77 years old. "It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world," the team posted on his official Facebook page, without specifying a cause of death. The musician in 2009 had been diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that affected his tongue. The exhibition flies high in every sense: it has gathered together 316 works by 93 women artists from 21 countries, which in many aspects of content and aesthetics challenge our idea of what art is. LOS ANGELES, CA.- Los Angeles Modern Auctions held another record-breaking auction of fine art, furniture, and design on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at their Van Nuys, California showroom. Along with several new world auction records for Kenneth Noland, Fred Eversley, Ed Ruscha, and Keith Haring, the auction was among the companys best results to date, with 81% sold by lot. While the value exceeded 166% of the expected pre-auction value, the average lot prices hit $22,670 per item, which was also a company record. Several important works of art by American artists surpassed expectations and set new records, including a painting by Kenneth Noland which soared to $550,000 against a pre-auction expected range of $100,000-150,000. The exhibition features a wide array of printed matter culled from the artists archive: tear sheets of drawings and comics, taken directly from the publications where the works first appeared, as well as related ephemera. Former Welsh keeper consigns Gordon Banks' England match-worn shirt for auction at Ewbank's
On February 28, Ewbanks Auctions are to offer for sale an international goalkeepers shirt worn by the late great Gordon Banks (1937-2019). Consigned by Dave Hollins, the Wales keeper in the same match, with whom Banks swapped the shirt at the end of the game, it comes from the October 12, 1963 British Championship fixture between Wales and England at Ninian Park, Cardiff, three years before Banks completed a golden run at the World Cup for champions England, starting every game. Alf Ramseys team, under the captaincy of Jimmy Armfield, put four goals past Hollins, two from the boot of Bobby Smith and one each from Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Charlton, in front of a 48,000 strong crowd. 'Roma' star's unlikely road from mountains of Mexico to Hollywood
TLAXIACO (AFP).- Yalitza Aparicio once was a newly qualified pre-school teacher living in a dusty mountain town in Mexico. Now, the 25-year-old is the star of Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" and an Oscar nominee -- a fairy tale marred by racist barbs the indigenous actress has encountered along the way. Aparicio -- who is part Mixtec and part Triqui -- grew up in Tlaxiaco in the southern state of Oaxaca, home to about 40,000 people. Die Neue Sammlung releases app that allows visitors to listen to the sounds of various exhibits
MUNICH.- The sounds of designer objects are often as characteristic as their shape. For this reason, from February 21, 2019 onwards visitors will be able to listen to the sounds of various exhibits at Die Neue Sammlung using a new Sound of Design Web app. The spectrum of sounds ranges from the ringing of old telephone sets to the specific engine sounds of iconic autos to the clicking of typewriter keys. Thanks to the app, the sounds are now part of the multimedia exhibition experience Die Neue Sammlung offers visitors and bring the otherwise museum-bound objects back to life. At present, the app includes 49 exhibits from the current show, and there are up to five different sounds for each. LONDON.- A jade green Alicante glass vase, designed in 1927, sold for an impressive £43,750 at Bonhams Knightsbridge yesterday (20 February). Doubling its initial estimate of £20,000-30,000, the vase made an auction record for the model. The sale of the large private collection of masterpieces by glassmaker René Lalique, assembled during the past 20 years, made a total of £570,638. Also in the sale; a 'Sauterelles' Vase, designed in 1913, sold for £22,500 (estimate: £4,000-6,000), and a Grande Boule Lierre vase (1923) made £20,000 (estimate: £18,000-22,000). NEW YORK, NY.- Future Perfect, the current exhibition of Richard Kalina is different than any of his previous shows with Lennon, Weinberg since 1992. He has set aside his signature process of collaging cut and painted sections of paper over linen, and has turned his attention entirely to oil painting. The new paintings follow from a framework that defined his 2016 show here, in which musings on modernist architecture were realized in a series that included both collaged paintings and oil paintings. Those oils of silhouetted shapes were followed by an intermediate body of work in which the boundaries of the shapes were penetrated by patterns of bands, circles and grids.
