The dedicated auction is led by a magnificent selection of important Kota Reliquary Figures from Gabon icons of African art. Most comprehensive overview of Frank Bowling's monumental paintings ever mounted opens at Haus der Kunst | | Exhibition at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery weaves together three bodies of work by Meschac Gaba | | Imperial War Museum North presents largest UK retrospective of Wyndham Lewis | Frank Bowling, Middle Passage, 1970. Acrylic on canvas, 321 x 281 cm. Courtesy the Artist © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2017. MUNICH.- Going back fifty years into Frank Bowling's career, Haus der Kunst presents "Frank Bowling: Mappa Mundi", the most comprehensive overview of the artist's monumental paintings ever on view. Born in Bartica, British Guiana, in 1934, Frank Bowling in the aftermath of World War II left his native country at the age of 19, arriving in London in 1953, as part of the momentous wave of Anglophone West Indian and Caribbean populations that migrated to England. Later he would study painting at The Slade School, and Royal College of Art, distinguishing himself - next to David Hockney - with the silver medal for painting in RCA's 1962 graduating class. Starting in the mid-1960s, Bowling began to surpass the rigid geometries of the pictorial field. The decisive moment of Bowling's artistic maturation was his move from London to New York in 1966. New York had produced postwar abstract painting of a certain scale and ambition. Bowling's painter ... More | | Meschac Gaba, St. John Episcopal Church, 2017. NEW YORK, NY.- Tanya Bonakdar Gallery announces its second solo exhibition with Meschac Gaba. On view June 22July 28, 2017, the exhibition weaves together three bodies of work, forging a powerful commentary on contemporary cultural identity and the current state of immigrants and refugees. Inspired by his experience living between the Netherlands and Benin since the late 1990s, Gaba has navigated and closely examined national and transnational identity constructs under the tumult of globalization. By playfully restructuring relationships between the Western world and developing worlds, the local and the global, art and the everyday, Gaba brings into question dominant codes and frameworks of identity and value. In the gallerys ground floor exhibition space, the artist presents a large-scale, multi-colored participatory work entitled Reflection Room Tent. Creating a direct reference ... SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love in San Francisco conjures images of hippies frolicking in the park with daisies in their hair. More News | Griot Museum presents "Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad" ST. LOUIS, MO.- They left in the middle of the night -- often carrying little more than the knowledge to follow the North Star. In the decades prior to the Civil War in 1865, an estimated one hundred thousand slaves became passengers on the Underground Railroad, a journey of untold hardship, in search of freedom. In Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad, a traveling exhibition which opens June 23 at the Griot Museum of Black History (2505 St. Louis Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63106), American photographer Jeanine Michna-Bales presents a remarkable series of images taken in the dead of night that reveal historical sites, cities and places that freedom-seekers passed through, including homes of abolitionists who offered them sanctuary. More Exhibition at Cassina Projects looks at the work of three international artists NEW YORK, NY.- Cassina Projects and ARTUNER are presenting In Praise of Shadows, a new exhibition on view at Cassina Projects. This is the fourth chapter of a joint exhibition programme between the two ventures. In 1933, the Japanese novelist Junichiro Tanizaki wrote the seminal essay on Japanese aesthetics In Praise of Shadows, outlining some of the key tenets of the countrys particular way of perceiving light and darkness. Although specific to Japan, today Tanizakis essay more widely speaks to an aesthetic sensibility that has spread to the West as well: an appreciation for the patina given by age, for humble materials, for muted hues, and for sombre, yet poignant compositions. This exhibition looks at the work of three international artists who find beauty not in the thing ... More Foam opens exhibition of works by Roger Ballen and Asger Carlsen AMSTERDAM.- In the collaborative project titled No Joke, artists Roger Ballen (1950, VS) and Asger Carlsen (1973, DK) explore the more sinister sides of the human psyche. Together the duo produced 37 images, without ever working in the same studio at the same time: their creative exchange and co-creation has been a purely online affair. Their menacing work evokes a sense of anxiety and longing that is usually experienced only in dreams. Although Roger Ballen lives in Johannesburg and Asger Carlsen in New York, the two artists have been working together online for some four years. In their bizarre universe, Carlsens use of the human body as a plastic medium and Ballens interest in collages and the occult merge together. They create an outlandish world full of distorted bodies, manic creatures, flesh and rough sketches in black, white and grey. Both frightening ... More E X I T: rodolphe janssen opens group exhibition BRUSSELS.- In art history the concept of an exit has long been associated with a break from tradition. Over time, exits have arrived as a result of artists considering new ways in which art could be made, as accepted standards were broken. Departures and ruptures within the visual arts have been linked to those occurring in society and politics. Many, throughout history, have resulted in significant changes to the world and to the lives of people. Some, which have been voted for, seemingly democratically by citizens, have been celebrated and praised, while others have been debated, doubted, and regretted, both within and beyond the confines of immediate influence and concern. E X I T is an exhibition that considers what it is to exit, to depart, to leave or be left, both with and without consent. Its leverage point is taken partly from the issue of Brexit, which likewise has been ... More Technologies, physical objects and natural processes cast anew through three engaging installations VANCOUVER.- Opening on June 24, 2017, the Vancouver Art Gallery will feature Persistence, on view until October 1, 2017. Persistence draws together three recent contemporary installations to explore the surprising and creative ways that technologies, physical objects and natural processes endure and transform. We are extremely proud to showcase three major installations by Julia Feyrer, Tamara Henderson, Shelagh Keeley and Germaine Koh from the Gallerys collection, says Kathleen S. Bartels, Director of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Looking at natural systems, cycles of economic forces, and the symbolic significance of everyday objects that surround us, these works have viewers directly contemplate the very rhythms of modern life. The exhibitions premise is inspired by Canadian media critic Marshall McLuhan and his ideas concerning obsolescence ... More Beijing-based artist Ji Zhou's most recent series of works on view at Klein Sun Gallery NEW YORK, NY.- Klein Sun Gallery announces Ji Zhou: Real Illusion, the artist's second solo exhibition with the gallery, on view from June 22 through August 5, 2017. Using photography as his main medium, Beijing-based artist Ji Zhous most recent series of works chronicles the daily changes of light, texture, and activity within natural and urban scenes. By documenting instances of a place throughout the day and recompiling them, the circadian rhythm is collapsed creating a single atemporal image. As a result, we are presented with information that is both factual and illusory, similar to Claude Monets Rouen Cathedral Series (1892 - 1894) and Vincent Van Goghs Haystacks (1888). With Building 3 (2017), Ji Zhou illustrates a reconstruction of a cityscape. He creates a collage by overlapping images of the same scene, each portrayed under a different degree of illumination. ... More Charlie Smith London opens exhibition of works by Dominic Shepherd LONDON.- In his fourth solo exhibition at the gallery, Dominic Shepherd continues to marry a deep and ongoing interest in mythology with a personalised, idiosyncratic worldview. Made as part of the series Old England, the paintings in this exhibition reach beyond the personal and historical to the political. Britain, surrounded by water, is a haunted isle. Colonialism; slavery; conquest; feudalism; reformation; democracy; civil war. Every locus is invested with ghosts of the past, a misty and sentimentalised landscape. In a climate where nationalism has gained so much traction globally, Shepherd addresses the relationship between actual and nostalgic notions of received traditions, opening onto a consideration of the complex relationship between Romanticism, folk, patriotism and nationalism. Viewed in the shadow of fundamental political change, Shepherd has been ... | href=' Flashback On a day like today, American painter Clyfford Still died June 23, 1980. Clyfford Still was a leader in the first generation of Abstract Expressionists who developed a new, powerful approach to painting in the years immediately following World War II. Still's contemporaries included Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Though the styles and approaches of these artists varied considerably, Abstract Expressionism is marked by abstract forms, expressive brushwork, and monumental scale, all of which were used to convey universal themes about creation, life, struggle, and death ("the human condition"), themes that took on a considerable relevance during and after World War II. In this image: Actor Jeremy Irons looks at a Clyfford Still painting during the opening ceremony of the exhibition 'Art in America Three Hundred Years of Innovation' in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.
