The kwab style is the most sensational and important Dutch contribution to the development of decorative art in Europe. Photo Rijksmuseum. AMSTERDAM.- Fantastic sea creatures, monstrous beasts, whimsical body shapes and fluid contours that seem to drip like syrup from a spoon: all are manifestations of the ornament style known as kwab, ?auricular? or ?lobate? - with the English denominations referring to the organic forms of the ear. In the 17th century their almost molten form was to be found on luxury items such as ewers, dishes, furniture, wall-hangings and frames in the most stylish interiors of the elite. The kwab style is the most sensational and important Dutch contribution to the development of decorative art in Europe. Its originators ? the Dutch silversmiths Paulus and Adam van Vianen and Johannes Lutma ? enjoyed unprecedented fame in their day. Their work was also an inspiration for artists such as Rembrandt and the cabinetmaker Herman Doomer. In this exhibition, a spectacular design by theatre and lighting designer Keso Dekker, renowned for his ballet sets by Hans van Manen, brings together 130 auricular masterpieces in t ... More |

SYDNEY (AFP).- Drawings of an Australasian cockatoo discovered on the pages of a 13th century European manuscript suggest trade Down Under was flourishing as far back as medieval times, researchers said Tuesday. Four images of the white cockatoo feature in the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II of Sicily's "De Arte Venandi cum Avibus" (The Art of Hunting with Birds), which dates from between 1241 and 1248 and is held in the Vatican library. The coloured drawings pre-date by 250 years what was previously believed to be the oldest European depiction of the bird, in Andrea Mantegna's 1496 altarpiece Madonna della Vittoria. Known since antiquity for its large gold deposits, northwestern Rosia Montana is one of 30 candidates being considered by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee meeting in Bahrain. The precise reasons for Bucharest's request were not clear. But in a statement the Romanian culture ministry implied that the UNESCO decision could have a bearing on whether or not it would have to pay damages in a case brought by Canadian mining company Gabriel Resources. It said it had asked UNESCO to delay the decision until the complaint brought by Gabriel Resources had been settled, "to protect the national assets and financial interests of the Romanian state". ... In her passion for collecting, Ingvild Goetz allowed herself to be guided by her interest in socio-political topics, formal-aesthetic issues and artistic materials, while always remaining open to new discoveries. The Sammlung Goetz celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2018 with a three-part exhibition in its own museum and in Haus der Kunst; the show is dedicated to women artists and their works, which are presented in an intergenerational dialogue. More Fundació Joan Miró presents a video installation exploring the idea of verticality BARCELONA.- The human body functions especially well at sea level, where atmospheric pressure and oxygen levels are high. This is largely why humans have historically spread out over the land horizontally, and why so many civilizations have been founded at altitudes near sea level. Nevertheless, humans have always felt an irresistible urge to explore sites that soar or plunge vertically, such as mountains or ocean trenches. And yet this vertical colonialism, in the artists words, has been hampered by the fact that we are physically ill-equipped to thrive at great depths and extreme altitudes. It is no coincidence that places located more than 8,000 meters above sea level, what mountaineers call the vertical limit, are known as death zones. Gideonsson/Londré have probed the effects of very high altitudes on humans and how these sensations can enhance ... As he moves slowly through the crowd, philosopher Mihai Sora -- who counts 100,000 followers on Facebook -- quickly attracts appreciation from his many fans. "You're an inspiration!" says one, while another shouts: "Thank you, maestro!" Sora often retreats under his wide, dark-brimmed hat from the adoration and the glare of the TV cameras, but he's not reticent about stating his reasons for joining the wave of protests condemning the government's campaign against alleged abuses by the judiciary.
