A wall relief inscription, discovered at the temple of Soleb, is displayed at the National Museum of Sudan in Khartoum on September 19, 2019. A team of French diggers has restored three Sudanese artefacts, including a 3,500-year-old wall relief, and handed them to the African country's national museum, a French archaeologist said. For decades international archaeologists have worked extensively in Sudan, proving that the northeast African country has its own wealth of ancient relics and was not merely a satellite of neighbouring Egypt. Ebrahim HAMID / AFP. KHARTOUM (AFP).- A team of French diggers has restored three Sudanese artefacts, including a 3,500-year-old wall relief, and handed them to the African country's national museum on Thursday, a French archaeologist said. The three artefacts were discovered at separate archaeological sites in recent years in Sudan and were restored by a French team of experts. The items are a wall painting of an ancient Kandaka Nubian queen, a Meroite stela and a wall relief inscription believed to be almost 3,500 years old. "The idea is to give back to the museum the most important archaeological pieces discovered and restored," said Marc Maillot, director of the French archaeological unit deployed in Sudan. The wall painting was found at El-Hassa site, the stela discovered at Sedeinga and the relief at the temple of Soleb, where French diggers along with Sudanese counterparts have conducted extensive archaeological work for several years. On Thursday the three artefacts were handed over to ... More |

| Selfies banned at Dutch museum's Nazi design expo | | Thieves nab 2-million-euro haul from vaunted French chateau | | Christie's to auction Marilyn Monroe photos and Hasselblad camera used by Douglas Kirkland | A man looks at a Nazi flag as he visits the exhibition "Design of the Third Reich" at the Design Museum Den Bosch in 's-Hertogenbosch, on September 17, 2019. Kenzo TRIBOUILLARD / AFP. 'S-HERTOGENBOSCH (AFP).- A Dutch museum has banned visitors from taking photos at a controversial exhibition of designs from Hitler's Nazi regime to stop them being "interpreted the wrong way". The crowds at the Design Museum in Den Bosch -- which has been sold out since "Design in the Third Reich" opened earlier this month -- look like those at any other museum, but with two important exceptions. Firstly, there is the extraordinary backdrop -- 277 articles ranging from a 1940s Volkswagen Beetle to statues of Hitler's favourite sculptor Arno Breker, propaganda posters and films by Nazi director Leni Riefenstahl. And secondly, the tell-tale lack of the smartphones that are normally ubiquitous at any tourist attraction or place of interest anywhere in the world. The exhibition's opening prompted protest from left-wing and anti-fascist groups who said they feared it could ... The owners of a 17th-century French palace said to be the model for Versailles were tied up as their opulent home was ransacked Thursday by robbers who fled with a haul worth two million euros ($2.2 million), police said. The Vaux-le-Vicomte chateau, set amid sumptuous gardens about 50 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Paris, has been owned by the same family since 1875. A police source said six hooded but unarmed robbers found neckties belonging to Patrice de Vogue, 90, to tie up him and his wife Cristina, 78, in their lodging on the grounds of the palace. The thieves targeted a safe and stole emeralds and other items, but did not attempt to make off with the chateau's works of art. The couple was not injured during the robbery, which occurred shortly before dawn, according to prosecutors in the nearby city of Melun. "The owners are doing fine and the chateau remains ... NEW YORK, NY.- For the public opening of 540 West 25th Street, Pace and Pace/ MacGill are presenting Peter Hujar: Master Class. Featuring a selection of Hujars black-and-white portraits acquired by Richard Avedon in the 1970s, the exhibition examines the photographers idiomatic approach to portraiture that treated each photograph as a stand-alone object, capable of evoking complex emotions and expressions. The influence of Avedons acclaimed Master Class, a weekly seminar taught by Avedon and art director Marvin Israel at Avedons New York City studio and in which Hujar was enrolled in 1967, is also being examined through scholarly research. The Master Class included visiting speakers such as Diane Arbus and Lucas Samaras, and opened doors for a number of young photographers. Avedon and Hujar remained friends following the workshops close and, over time, Avedon acquired ... More | | Richard Tuttle, One Red Orange Sway, 1986. Mixed media, 52 x 26 x 7.5 cm. Hubert Looser Collection, © 2019 Richard Tuttle, courtesy Pace Gallery. ZURICH.- The exhibition shows 110 works of Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Arte Povera and Minimal Art, and includes some surprising positions from Pop Art and Classical Modernism. This exploration of the play of lines and textures on the surface of the drawing paper brings audiences closer to the sculptures presence in space. One of the earliest and most significant works in the Looser Collection is a large-format drawing by Arshile Gorky. Born in the Ottoman Empire, Gorky was compelled to emigrate to the US in 1920 and thereafter became particularly involved with Surrealism. The key work in the Looser Collection is arguably one of the most important drawings from the 1930s held in Switzerland. In it, Gorky uniquely depicts a combination of figural and abstract-biomorphic elements. While inspired by Picassos research, he also seems to anticipate elements of an abstraction that would not come to prominence in the US until much later, through ... | Giant art project transforms East German housing blocks | | October is antique advertising month at Morphy's | | Blanton Museum of Art appoints new Latin American Curator | Artists from the urban art collective "Freiraumgalerie" Danilo Halle (L) and Philipp Eichhorn work on a giant mural on a residential building owned by the HWG housing company in Halle on August 22, 2019. John MACDOUGALL / AFP. HALLE (SAALE) (AFP).- An enduring reminder of the communist era, the vast, concrete "Plattenbau" tower blocks that surround cities in eastern Germany are usually considered eyesores rather than works of art. Yet, a new urban culture project in the city of Halle, 170 kilometres (around 100 miles) southwest of Berlin, hopes to promote social cohesion by transforming architectural sins into monumental masterpieces. By brightening up the grey blocks made of prefabricated concrete slabs and often associated with poverty and tensions, artists aim to get people who don't normally interact talking. Adorning the side of one block, a three-dimensional mural in vivid colour depicts an astronaut descending from a satellite-like spaceship via a wooden ladder held by two men far below him. In the background is a clear blue sky, giving the illusion that the walls have ... More Exhibition of new work by Fernando Bryce on view at Alexander and Bonin NEW YORK, NY.- Alexander and Bonin is presenting The Decade Review, an exhibition of new work by Fernando Bryce that chronicles the intellectual, political and cultural currents of the 1970s. Fernando Bryces drawings systematically re-examine the way historical events are represented in media and cultural production. Bryce describes his work as mimetic analysis, which involves culling archives for advertisements, newspaper articles, propaganda pamphlets, comics, and other print materials relating to specific political developments. He then reproduces these original documents in ink on standard paper formats. By bringing the archive into the present, Bryce goes beyond a simple portrait of the past and makes us question the way that history is narrated. Installed across the main gallery is the eponymous work, an assemblage of 110 meticulously reproduced ... More South African star soars in 'La Traviata' for social media age PARIS (AFP).- South African opera singer Pretty Yende, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last years, has hit new heights in a Paris production of "La Traviata" where the heroine is a social media influencer destroyed by the same society that propelled her to fame. In the new Paris Opera version of Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece, the heroine Violetta is an internet celebrity like Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian, with her own brand of perfume and millions of followers. Yet her fame turns to despair and solitude as she is forced to abandon her love for Alfredo -- and the smiling emoji faces turn to tears. Greeted with a standing ovation on opening night, the 34-year-old Yende, who was born in the small South African town of Piet Retief, conquered the vocal demands of Violetta in the first time she has taken on the emblematic role. But she also proved an inspired ... These watercolors on linen measuring 6.5 feet (two meters) high are almost all untitled and find a main character of sorts in a sketch of a nude man, who appears to float amid a dreamlike landscape with blending colors, waves of cars and at times one of Los Angeles' most known monuments, Griffith Observatory. The exhibitions title Reading Room is a nod to one of the central theses of Hewitts practice, which works to disrupt and complicate entrenched readings of images and art objects as fixed or static, exposing a web or at times a knot of overlapping interpretations. For more than fifteen years, Hewitt has explored the relationship between image, text and object, but also the influence of repetition, meter and perspective as an extension of photographys aesthetic power.
