MARGATE.- Today, Turner Contemporary unveiled an exhibition of work by the four artists shortlisted for Turner Prize 2019: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Helen Cammock, Oscar Murillo and Tai Shani. The exhibition will be held from 28 September 2019 to 12 January 2020 at Turner Contemporary in Margate. The winner will be announced on 3 December 2019 at an award ceremony broadcast live on the BBC as the official broadcast partner for the Turner Prize. Artist and private ear Lawrence Abu Hamdan creates audio-video installations, audio-archives and performances. HOUSTON, TX.- The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, announced today the acquisition of a newly rediscovered masterwork by 19th-century French painter Eugène Delacroix: Women of Algiers in Their Apartment (183334). The painting will go on view at the Museum on October 3. The work is the first version of Delacroixs widely acknowledged masterpiece at the Louvre, Femmes dAlger (1834), which toured as part of the acclaimed 2018 retrospective of the artist, co-organized by the Louvre with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The whereabouts of the Houston version, last recorded in an 1850 sale, were unknown until 2018, when Paris gallerist Philippe Mendes discovered the painting in the apartment of a Paris collector; she had approached Mendes for authentication. NEW YORK, NY.- Hauser & Wirth and Fondazione Lucio Fontana today announced a collaboration that will unfold over the coming two years with a trilogy of exhibitions at the gallerys international spaces, and three major new publications by Hauser & Wirth Publishers. The trilogy of Fontana exhibitions will be presented in Los Angeles, New York, and Hong Kong, each with a specific area of focus. COPENHAGEN.- Reproduction at Copenhagen Contemporary (28 September 2019 to 13 April 2020) and Behaviour at Kunsten (26 September 2019 to 23 February 2020) complement each other in content and form as they explore the human perception of our world. Carsten Höller holds a PhD in agricultural science and worked as a scientist for several years before becoming an artist. His artworks incorporate elements from playgrounds, zoos and amusement parks, often presented in a pseudo-scientific environment to give the impression of research. LOS ANGELES, CA.- The Los Angeles photographer Laura Aguilar, who died last year at the age of 59, created work that explored her own identity, challenged traditional notions of beauty, and celebrated the ties that bound her to the Latinx, queer, and working-class communities in the city. Now, a group of the artists most important works will remain in Los Angeles, with the J. Paul Getty Museum announcing the acquisition of 35 photographs from five series that span Aguilars 30-year career. BALTIMORE, MD.- The Baltimore Museum of Art announced that noted collectors and philanthropists Pamela J. Joyner and Alfred J. Giuffrida have gifted the museum a group of seven works by artists Radcliffe Bailey, Zander Blom, Moshekwa Langa, Clifford Owens, Adam Pendleton, and Purvis Young, plus two promised gifts of large-scale paintings by Meleko Mokgosi and Angel Otero that will come to the museum at a later date. The gift coincides with the September 29 opening of Generations: A History of Black Abstract Art, which draws on the extensive Joyner/Giuffrida collection as well as the BMAs own holdings to examine the significant contributions that black artists have made to the development of abstraction from the 1940s to the present. DUBLIN.- Kerlin Gallery is presenting I dreamt I dwelt, an exhibition of new sculptures by Dorothy Cross. At the heart of the exhibition, a shark rises up from a floor of Carrara marble as if emerging from the ocean. The serenity of the marbles surface, almost five meters in length and rippled by bluish veins, is interrupted by the ascendant body of this creature, glassy-eyed and frozen in space: we are not sure whether it is living or dead. The history of the shark, spanning over 420 million years, is longer than that of the stone from which it is carved and yet it is the creatures vulnerability, along with that of all marine life, that is captured in this moment.
