This documentary about Brian Eno is never the same twice
NEW YORK, NY.- Gary Hustwit had a simple wish: to make a documentary about visionary musician Brian Eno. When that wasn’t possible, he devised a far less simple approach. He made 52 quintillion documentaries about Eno. At a time when it seems like there’s a movie about every band that’s recorded even a 45, Hustwit’s “Eno,” which opened Friday, is unlike any other portrait of a musician. It’s not even a portrait, because it isn’t fixed or static. Instead, Hustwit used a proprietary software program that reconfigures the length, structure and contents of the movie. “Every time it plays, it’s a different movie,” Hustwit told an audience in May at the film’s New York premiere. “I’m surprised every time I see it.” His collaborator, digital artist and programmer Brendan Dawes, explained that because of the variables, including ... Centraal Museum presents Rory Pilgrim in Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd
BUNNIK.- Rory Pilgrim’s solo exhibition is on show in Landhuis Oud Amelisweerd. Social engagement, music, and an attention to language and dialogue characterise the work of Rory Pilgrim (Bristol, 1988). Pilgrim has been living and working in the Netherlands for around 15 years and has built up a multifaceted oeuvre of song lyrics, musical compositions and videos, films, drawings, installations and live performances. Pilgrim brings together different generations and life experiences and poses questions about living together and caring for one another and for the world. For Oud Amelisweerd, Pilgrim has selected three films, plus drawings, posters and installations from the past 15 years. After the Dutch elections in November 2023, Pilgrim was reminded of their feeling of a loss of solidarity post Brexit. This influenced their selection of films—Violently ... More

Cowboy hats and Koi fish photos? There's a reason.
NEW YORK, NY.- Andrew Torrey has turned the front door of his New York apartment into a teleportation device, whisking visitors off to another place and time whenever they drop by. That, at least, was his intention. Torrey, an interior designer, was raised on a farm in rural Kansas, 6 miles from the closest neighbors. It’s a setting he sorely misses and aims to re-create in his carefully decorated Sutton Place rental. “I want to be surrounded on all sides by things that I love,” Torrey said. New York is nothing without its newcomers, and while the city embraces a multitude of traditions and cultures, many transplants — including a real-life cowboy like Torrey — still feel out of place. To stay connected, some interior designers use their professional know-how to remind themselves of the places and people they grew up ... More

Walker Art Center to open most in-depth museum exhibition of artist Walter Price
MINNEAPOLIS, MN.- Brooklyn-based artist Walter Price (b. 1989) isn’t afraid of color. Instead, he sees freedom and joy in its endless possibilities. One glimpse at his exuberant canvases, which burst with lush, vivid hues, make this perspective abundantly clear. In August, visitors to the Walker Art Center will have an opportunity to experience nearly 25 of Price’s evocative paintings, which blur the boundaries between figuration and abstraction and draw viewers into his singular visual world. Titled Walter Price: Pearl Lines, the exhibition represents the most in-depth museum exploration of the artist’s practice to-date, and features selections from significant bodies of work produced between 2017 and 2023, including a painting acquired by the Walker in 2020 that will be on public display for the first time. 'Sing Sing' review: Divine interventions
NEW YORK, NY.- Spoken by the two key characters in the prison-set drama “Sing Sing,” the word “beloved” is as moving as it is unexpected. It uplifts and gently shatters. It makes a case for the deep respect and deeper amity forged in a theater program set up at the eponymous maximum-security facility. Colman Domingo imbues his character John Whitfield, aka Divine G, with a steadfast compassion but also the tamped-down frustrations of a man convicted of a crime he says he didn’t commit. And Clarence Maclin — a formerly incarcerated newcomer whose story, along with that of the actual Whitfield, the film is built upon — burrows into his former self in a finessed and fierce performance as Divine Eye, the prison-yard alpha who auditions for Sing Sing’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts theater program. That program is the movie’s other ... More

Release of Kevin Costner's next 'Horizon' film is canceled
NEW YORK, NY.- Kevin Costner’s audacious experiment seems to have failed. Costner tried something rare this summer, releasing the first chapter of his western saga “Horizon” — which he directed, starred in, co-wrote and partly financed — in theaters across the country on June 28. The plan was for the second chapter in the sprawling story to be released six weeks later. But thanks to paltry box office returns, that plan has been scuttled. On Wednesday, New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Bros., said it was canceling the theatrical release of “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2,” which was scheduled to debut in theaters on Aug. 16. The first chapter, which cost $100 million, made $11 million in its opening weekend and has generated just $22.6 million overall. Costner planned for the saga, about the settling of the West ... 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' review: Sprinkling magic under a night sky
NEW YORK, NY.- “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Shakespeare’s sylvan comic fantasy about mischief-making fairies and enchanted lovers, is such gossamer entertainment that it’s always a jolt to be reminded, near the start of the play, why the smitten young couple Hermia and Lysander flee to the forest in the first place. It’s because Hermia’s father, Egeus, one of Shakespeare’s many dreadful patriarchs, forbids her to marry Lysander. He insists that she wed Demetrius, a suitor whom she does not love. “As she is mine,” Egeus says in Carl Cofield’s stylish production for the Classical Theater of Harlem, “I may dispose of her: which shall be either with this gentleman” — Demetrius, that is — “or, according to our law, unto her death.” During Sunday’s opening-night performance, the mention of a death sentence for Hermia drew a gasp ... Shannen Doherty, 'Beverly Hills, 90210' star, dies at 53
NEW YORK, NY.- Shannen Doherty, the raven-haired actress known for playing headstrong characters in the 1990s television dramas “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed,” and who had tried in recent years to shed her rebellious reputation, died Saturday at her home in Malibu, California. She was 53. The cause was cancer, her publicist, Leslie Sloane, said in an emailed statement. Doherty learned she had breast cancer in February 2015 and had been open about her struggle with it in the years since. In the summer of 2016, she shaved her head as a group of friends stood by, and in 2017, she announced that the cancer was in remission. It returned in 2020, and in June 2023, Doherty announced that the cancer had spread to her brain. In November, she said it had spread to her bones. But she continued to work, and started ... More
