PARIS.- Galerie Perrotin presents the first solo exhibition in Paris dedicated to the Swedish artist Jens Fänge. When we study Jens Fänges new works for The Hours Before somehow Luigi Pirandellos absurdist play from 1921, Six Characters in Search of an Author, comes to mind. I think this is because Fänges assemblages force onlookers to reconsider again and again what it is we are actually seeing or maybe witnessing. There is a drama going on here, but which one? And what is it about? In Pirandellos famous play the rehearsals are interrupted by six characters, who enter the scene claiming that they are the real characters, constantly criticizing the actors for failing to get a detail right. After trying to chase them away, the Director gives in, and attempts to integrate the Characters stories into the play which, of course, fails ... More News | Field of Blooms by Erin Hanson: A Brush with Expressionism LOS ANGELES, CA.- Erin Hanson is best known for her unsuppressed utilization of color and chunky yet precise brush strokes; her focus is typically of rolling hills, craggy rocks and patchwork skies. Her style and subject matter may be transitioning into something a touch more expressionistic with abstract liberties taken, as with this zoomed-in floral piece. A Los Angeles native, Hanson can be found exploring the National Parks and California Coast when not holed up in her gallery and studio just north of Downtown LA, close enough to find excellent food, yet far enough to avoid the extreme bustle and traffic. Field of Blooms is the pillar of her most recent Romance in Bloom collection. It measures 13-feet wide and when viewed in person leaves most slack-jawed. Hansons use of color pits striking purples against apple greens and swirls of cherry reds; nary a color ... More Palais de Tokyo exhibits the work of Sara Favriau PARIS.- Winner of the Prix Découverte des Amis du Palais de Tokyo in 2014, Sara Favriau (born in 1983, lives in Paris) deploys a monumental, poetic sculpture, made of cleats of sculpted wood, assembled into cabincontainers, in which several artists have been invited to exhibit. Sara Favriau is attached to the idea of prolongation, creating bridges between form and content. She appropriates classic production techniques and extends them: moulding transforms blisters into anthropomorphic bas-reliefs, a sculpture of manufactured cleats sketches out the structure of the cabins, the marquetry of layers of plywood generates the pattern of a Mashrabiya. "What causes the work to exist is this open door, freeing it from any description, wavering between form and meaning." 3 Recently, the artist has begun a sculptural work using wooden cleats taken from the construction industry. ... The nature of the exhibition is such that sculptures, paintings and installations transition from prop to image to art object, staging an enquiry into whether these fictional depictions in mass media ultimately have greater influence in defining a collective understanding of art than art itself does. The arena of the circuswhere ancient rituals are passed through the ages into the present dayconjures laughter and wonder, disbelief, and fear. This is a space where assumed natural orders can be reversed and undone as demonstrated through displays of mastery over wild animals and fire, in moments where the rules of physics are seemingly defied, and in acts where the body and identity are truly malleable. While the artists in this exhibition work from 21st century perspectives, they similarly explore the significance of special effects created ... More
