LONDON.- The Modern British & Irish Art sale at Christies South Kensington on 17 March will include two early paintings by Irish artist Tony OMalley which, when turned over and joined together, reveal a lost unfinished nude by Francis Bacon. Bacon started Figure when working in St Ives, Cornwall in the late 1950s, but when the artist cut short his visit following an argument with this partner he abandoned the work, among many others. The work was divided into two by OMalley who went on to paint two scenes on the opposite sides: Currach, Clare Island and Evening Landscape Tehidy Hospital. For years these works were separated, residing in the collections of two different owners. When we study Jens Fänges new works for The Hours Before somehow Luigi Pirandellos absurdist play from 1921, Six Characters in Search of an Author, comes to mind. I think this is because Fänges assemblages force onlookers to reconsider again and again what it is we are actually seeing or maybe witnessing. There is a drama going on here, but which one? PARIS.- Winner of the Prix Découverte des Amis du Palais de Tokyo in 2014, Sara Favriau (born in 1983, lives in Paris) deploys a monumental, poetic sculpture, made of cleats of sculpted wood, assembled into cabincontainers, in which several artists have been invited to exhibit. Sara Favriau is attached to the idea of prolongation, creating bridges between form and content. She appropriates classic production techniques and extends them: moulding transforms blisters into anthropomorphic bas-reliefs, a sculpture of manufactured cleats sketches out the structure of the cabins, the marquetry of layers of plywood generates the pattern of a Mashrabiya. Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt dies at 86
VIENNA (AF).- Celebrated Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, considered to be the "pope" of the Baroque music revival, died Saturday aged 86, three months after announcing his retirement, his family announced. "Nikolaus Harnoncourt took his last breath peacefully surrounded by family," said the short announcement carried by the Austrian news agency APA. In December Harnoncourt had announced his retirement, citing health reasons, in a farewell letter to the audience of the Wiener Musikverein, home to the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. Flashback On a day like today, Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan, was born March 07, 1872. Pieter Cornelis "Piet" Mondriaan, after 1906 Mondrian (March 7, 1872 - February 1, 1944) was a Dutch painter. He was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group, which was founded by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three primary colors.
