A woman looks at Jacopo Tintoretto's "Portrait of a Widow" (early 1550s) during a preview of "Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice" at the National Gallery of Art in Washington on March 19, 2019. What is clear from the first major Tintoretto retrospective outside of Europe, opening Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, is that the "impetuous genius" critics reviled for his free, "unfinished" style was a bold innovator whose impact can still be felt today. Olivia Hampton / AFP. by Olivia Hampton WASHINGTON (AFP).- When he was just a teenager, Tintoretto was sent to Italian Renaissance painter Titian's studio, only to be kicked out within days because the older master got jealous. Or so goes the legend. What is clear from the first major Tintoretto retrospective outside of Europe, opening Sunday at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, is that the "impetuous genius" critics reviled for his free, "unfinished" style was a bold innovator whose impact can still be felt today. The exhibition, a debut for the museum's first woman director Kaywin Feldman, comes on the heels of city-wide celebrations and shows for the artist's 500th birthday in his hometown of Venice. Jean-Paul Sartre called Tintoretto the "first film director," a theatricality seen in paintings like "The Conversion of Saint Paul" (circa 1544). The eponymous scene happens in one corner of a canvas otherwise dominated by extravagant, zigzagging brushstrokes deliberately left clearly visible -- then a groundbreaking innovation -- to d ... Artist Ben Long was commissioned to create the new piece for The Dog: A Celebration at Chatsworth creating a playful and alert sculpture of a dog constructed entirely from metal scaffolding. Ben explains: Part of the challenge of working in scaffolding is overcoming the inherent lifelessness of this large scale material in order to describe organic form. While soft and cuddly is in no way achievable in steel, my ambition for Dog Scaffolding Sculpture does extend to capturing something akin to the abundant energy and playfulness that the canine species embodies. Powder-coated steel frame, powder-coated metal grid, casters, plastic twine. BERLIN.- Gropius Bau explores the concept of crafts and handmade processes in Berlins contemporary art scene, taking its history as a former museum for decorative arts and educational institution as a starting point. When Dorothy Iannone serenaded her friend Mary Harding in 1977 she sang an avowal to the city of Berlin, a place she had moved to only a year before with the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin programme and where she has lived ever since. Her line And Berlin will always need you, forms the title of the first exhibition presented at the Gropius Bau in 2019. And Berlin Will Always Need You. Art, Craft and Concept Made in Berlin is a distinctly contemporary art exhibition that sheds light on artists practices in the city. With 2019 marking the centenary of the Bauhaus, ... PARIS.- Back from his residency at Villa Medicis, Abdelkader Benchamma is exhibiting at Galerie Daniel Templon for the very first time. Through the recurring medium of black and white murals, chosen for their simplicity and graphic power, the artist has developed a language which causes viewers to doubt their perception of reality, immersing them in unstable and dynamic universes. From enveloping moving matter at the New York Drawing Center (2015-2016) to a cave animated by a furious circular vortex for the Sharjah Biennale (2017) and a fossilised Big Bang covering the floor of the Collège des Bernadins (2018), his somewhat metaphysical installations question our relationship with the intangible, the infinite, the invisible. PARIS.- Make no mistake: despite the name, Otani Workshop does not refer to a collective of artists, but to a singular, an eminently singular sculptor who has become the leading representative of Japanese ceramics. Silent and literally bulging heads, figures with their arms raised like praying figures, monumental middle fingers extended upwards, anthropomorphic vases, children, animals, soils, bronzes: Otani Workshops bestiary is a world in itself, a world in which dreams and tales converge as well as fantasies and daydreams, a world in which the queenly imagination and the kingly gesture triumph, in which forces and forms meet. | More News | Hybrid Sculpture: Stedelijk Museum opens exhibition of contemporary sculpture from the collection AMSTERDAM.- Hybrid Sculpture presents a selection of work from the collection Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam that reveals how radically sculpture has changed since 1990. The exhibition will feature more than twenty pieces, most of them large-scale works, by eighteen artists. The title Hybrid Sculpture refers to the fact that almost none of the works looks like a sculpture in the traditional sense: the artists blur the boundaries between sculpture and painting, performance, video art and design. Some of the artworks have never been shown in the museum before. For the artists in Hybrid Sculpture, the aim is not to create a pure sculpture informed by the classic sculptural properties such as volume and space. Instead, their practice centres around combining a variety of media and appropriating objects from pop culture and everyday life, transforming them ... More Offbeat art fest puts abandoned California town back on map BOMBAY BEACH (AFP).- By any stretch of the imagination, Bombay Beach is an oddity, starting with its exotic name, its location by a dying lake and the post-apocalyptic landscape that greets visitors. The desert town, once a thriving resort set along the Salton Sea, is among the poorest communities in California, its 250 or so residents seemingly forgotten by the rest of the world. Most of the homes have been abandoned for decades, their yards filled with beat-up trailers and rusted cars. But the tiny hamlet is experiencing a rebirth of sorts as a group of artists and well-heeled sponsors have taken up residence, buying up dirt-cheap property and organizing an annual three-day festival called the Bombay Beach Biennale. Launched in 2016, the festival, which is being held this weekend, is the brainchild of three Los Angeles-based friends -- Tao Ruspoli, ...
