Esme Ward, the Manchester Museumâs director, in Manchester, England on Feb. 13, 2023. The Manchester Museum was founded at the pinnacle of the British Empire and now it is embracing the cityâs South Asian population and reassessing the colonial past. (Tom Jamieson/The New York Times) by Farah Nayeri MANCHESTER.- The World War I uniform, found in a family trunk in Pakistan, is in a glass case of its own, honoring colonial subjects who fought for Britain. Nearby is a rickshaw festooned with flowers and ribbons, imported from Bangladesh and richly decorated by Bangladeshi and British artists. A large self-portrait on the wall, titled I Beg You to Define Me, shows a young woman wearing elaborately embroidered South Asian garments over sweatpants and running shoes. This is the new South Asia Gallery at the Manchester Museum, which reopens Saturday after an eight-year, $18 million redevelopment. The first permanent museum gallery in Britain to spotlight the South Asian diaspora, it focuses on the communitys lived experience: on what it means to be British and South Asian at the same time. The gallery was curated not by a posse of bookish conservators but by 30 local people of South Asian heritage. They came up with the stories they wanted to tell and looked for the objects that tol ... More |

Exhibition of new and recent works by Aki + Arnaud Cooren opens at Carpenters Workshop Gallery New York | | Historic building in Tribeca to become Marian Goodman Gallery's new home | | Almine Rech Paris opens 'Hiba Schahbaz Love Songs' | Tiss-Tiss Bedside Table with Door Green Pair, 2019. NEW YORK, NY.- Carpenters Workshop Gallery New York presents Between Realities, an exhibition of new and recent works by Aki + Arnaud Cooren in conversation with the works of German sculptor and photographer, Thomas Demand. Between Realities develops the themes underpinning the Tiss-Tiss collection, leaning into the visual dissonance between reality and the appearance of each artwork. Aki + Arnaud capture the delicate textual materiality of linen, alchemized in cast aluminum. The result is a trompe loeil effect that deceives the perception of the viewer, upon closer inspection the true nature of the work is discovered. The French philosopher, Jean Baudrillard, has an immense impact on the practice of both Aki + Arnaud Cooren and Thomas Demand. Baudrillards thesis Simulacra and Simulation touches on the relationship between reality, symbols, and society, in particular the significations and symbolism of culture ... PARIS.- Hiba Schahbazs artistic education, which was certainly anchored in a certain technical and ideological tradition in the art and miniature schools of Lahore, cannot and should not be resolved in a single environment but rather through contact with the history of Western painting, which she cultivated at a very early age through reproductions in books. The fact remains that the young Pakistanis of her generation who studied in the 1990s and 2000s in Lahore or Karachi schools were always subject to an academic framework, not to mention a rigorous orthodoxy. This framework assigned the role of voicing political and social problems, often from a nationalist perspective, to painting, rather than that of exploring the stirrings of the female body in all its sensuality. It is understandable that Hiba Schahbaz's unbridled fidelity to the female nude, from her childhood to the present day, has not come without its challenges. Naturally, ... More |

BARCELONA.- Between Circles and Constellations, an exhibition curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose and Hiuwai Chu, brings together the projects of Bouchra Khalili (born in Casablanca in 1975, lives and works in Berlin and Vienna) from the last ten years, including film, video, installation, photography and silkscreen printing and editorial platforms. Language and speech are an essential part of Khalili's investigations and are employed as a powerful form of resistance against hegemonic powers. Through a constant dialogue between history and the present, the show reflects on belonging, civic action, political agency and the need for what the artist calls radical citizenship. Her proposals invite us to meditate on the complex relationships between poetry, orality, performance as a form of visibility, and on the place occupied by Position of the storyteller as a witness to history. The exhibition is conceived as a constellation in which works are interconnected through their shared reflections ... More |

NEW YORK, NY.- The George Adams Gallery opened their first solo exhibition of paintings by Maya Brodsky, her first in ten years. Intimate in both their scale and subject, Brodsky draws on her lived experience to create paintings that are deeply personal yet universal in their concerns. The exhibition, Moments of Being, includes work from the past five years, a period that encompasses the birth of her second daughter, Eda. The title of the exhibition, Moments of Being, derives from the autobiographical essay by Virginia Woolf, A Sketch of the Past, which investigates the recording of memory itself. Woolf describes the consequential moments of being as distinct from those everyday moments of non-being, calling them the scaffolding in the background; [the] invisible and silent part of my life. Likewise, Brodsky searches out those moments of being to translate ... More | | 1991 PowerBook 100. "Si On: I Am An Outcast From The World" on view at James Fuentes | | Lehmann Maupin opens an exhibition of new work by Tony Oursler | | Largest known private library of 20th & 21st century books on to be offered at auction | Si On, Big Happy Hair Day, 2022. Oil and spray on canvas, 42 1/8 x 38 5/8 inches. NEW YORK, NY.- Si On: I Am An Outcast From The World is now on view at James Fuentes through March 19, 2023. The power and presence of Si Ons artwork materializes through a method best described as sgraffito. Unplanned, heavy layers of paint are applied to canvas then scraped or scrubbed away. Through repetition of this destructive and creative action the details of a latent, unconscious expression come into view. Image and form ergo directly emerge as lower levels of color penetrate those superficial layers that cover it. This process is also emblematic of the ways in which Si On takes on painting as a place for surfacing deep-seated, unseen emotion that is as universal as it is intimately personal. In a world constructed of unspoken forces, this is no less than a life-sustaining practice of expulsion and transformation. The influence of Korean shamanism often comes up in discussions of Si Ons work. At this juncture art becomes wh ... More | | Tony Oursler, MHz, 2023. Over the last four decades, Oursler has explored popular culture through a diverse combination of multimedia projects, immersive environments, expansive outdoor installations, and dynamic dolls, ghosts, and bots that liberate video from its traditional two-dimensional format and bring it into the realm of sculpture. Often taking the human form, especially the face, as his subject, Oursler examines psychological states, the interaction between technological progress and society, and the history of science, pseudoscience, spiritualism, and religion. For his latest exhibition the artist has created a series of electrified silhouettes that feature painted and printed collages interspersed with embedded digital displays, as well as an ... More News | Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery opens a solo exhibition with NYC-based artist Erika Ranee NEW YORK, NY.- Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is presenting their first solo exhibition with NYC-based artist Erika Ranee. Titled All Natural, the show features new paintings that exemplify the artists process-based studio practice, developing complex and deeply beautiful surfaces from myriad applications of paint, collage, and mark-making. Ranee takes inspiration from the world all around her; a crosstown bus ride might reveal pops of color in a passengers bright blue IKEA bag seen against municipal orange plastic seats. A bucket of Purple Dark acrylic, discontinued by Guerra Paints but gifted to the artist, might bring to mind dahlias and peonies, her favorite flowers. All Natural refers to Ranees time spent between NYC and rural Western Massachusetts, and an ongoing fascination with both the fertile, natural world of the countryside ... More Delbert Anderson's mission: Putting 'Native sound back into jazz' FARMINGTON, NM.- To drive the high desert roads of northern New Mexico is to navigate mountain passes, red rock mesas and dry river washes, and to spot the hogans, hamlets and sheep herds of the vast and remote Navajo Nation. Fiddling with the dial on the car radio during my time there usually generates only static. Except one day came the sound of a silken and soulful trumpet, as a station played a haunting ballad, Narbona, with unmistakable Navajo phrasing. The song was the handiwork of the Delbert Anderson Trio, and it felt as if it had arisen from the folds of this land. Delbert Anderson, 36, is a Navajo jazz musician, and he and his bandmates live in Farmington, a city of 46,000 perched just east of the reservation where he was born, which is the size of the Republic of Ireland. The trios drummer, Nick Lucero, 39, half Peruvian Quechua ... More Letting go of her ballet dream NEW YORK, NY.- One recent Saturday morning at Steps on Broadway, a rehearsal studio on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, ballet dancers pirouetted to recordings of classical piano music while an instructor guided them. Some of the dancers were retired pros practicing at the barre. Others were weekend warriors indulging Swan Lake fantasies while getting in some cardio. Writer Alice Robb, wearing a pink leotard and ballet slippers, stood out. Her tendus seemed a little more elegant than everyone elses, and when she jumped into the air for petit allegro, she soared just a little bit higher. Afterward, Robb emerged from a changing room in jeans and a gray knit sweater, carrying a Vanity Fair tote bag. As she cooled off, she observed an advanced ballet class, watching the movements of a girl who looked about 13. Shes good, Robb said. Very ... More His shows take on big issues. They're also good yarns. NEW YORK, NY.- Because his shows are based on research and interviews, and are grounded in pressing social issues, British writer and director Alexander Zeldin is often said to practice docu-theater. The first part of his Inequalities trilogy, Beyond Caring (2014), is about zero-hour contracts (a British term for when an employer does not have to offer a minimum number of hours), while Faith, Hope and Charity (2019) is set at a community center for the poor and the homeless. Zeldins Love, which starts previews at the Park Avenue Armory on Saturday, and opened in 2016 at the National Theater in London, takes place in a temporary-housing facility. The whole project is to write the tragic knot of our time, Zeldin said. Yet he grimaced when that docu-theater label came up in a video conversation from London, where he was rehearsing ... More Obie Awards honor 'English' as best new play NEW YORK, NY.- The Obie Awards, back on track after a lengthy pandemic hiatus, are naming English, an acclaimed comedic drama set in an Iranian test-prep classroom, the best new American play staged off-Broadway over a two-year period. The play, written by Iranian American playwright Sanaz Toossi, depicts four students, each at different stages of life and with different motivations, struggling to master English well enough to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language. The play was staged in New York early last year as a coproduction of the Atlantic and Roundabout theater companies. In The New York Times, critic Jesse Green wrote, Both contemplative and comic, it nails every opportunity for big laughs as its English-learning characters struggle with accents and idioms. But the laughter provides cover for the deeper idea that their ...
