The newly repainted Salle des Bronzes, still in the process of renovations, at the Louvre in Paris, March 5, 2021. The Cy Twombly Foundation is taking the Louvre to court over the renovations in a gallery that boasts a monumental blue ceiling mural designed in 2010 by Twombly, the abstract American painter, who died in 2011. Dmitry Kostyukov/The New York Times. by Doreen Carvajal PARIS (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- In the midst of a pandemic, with empty galleries, shuttered doors and plunging revenues, the Louvre faces new turbulence: a legal fight over the color of its walls. Stucco cream? Or warm terra cotta? Those are the hues of palace intrigue at the storied French museum, which is awaiting the imminent decision of President Emmanuel Macron about whether to appoint a new leader or to extend a third term to its current president, Jean-Luc Martinez. Some freshly repainted walls in the museum are now at the center of a trans-Atlantic legal clash between the Louvre and the Cy Twombly Foundation in New York over extensive renovations in its Salle des Bronzes. That gallery, now empty of its Greek antiquities, boasts a monumental blue ceiling mural designed in 2010 by Twombly, an abstract American painter, who ... More |

Naomi Rosenblum, historian of photography, dies at 96 | | Neanderthals listened to the world much like us | | Hindman Auctions to present 'Spring Fashion: A Century Of Couture' this month | Rosenblum was the author of seminal works that helped bring scholarship and recognition to photography as a creative art form. by Katharine Q. Seelye NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Naomi Rosenblum, who wrote about the history of photography and helped elevate it as an art form, died Feb. 19 at her home in Long Island City in the New York borough of Queens. She was 96. The cause was congestive heart failure, her family said. Rosenblum was the author of seminal works that helped bring scholarship and recognition to photography as a creative art form after practitioners, notably Alfred Stieglitz, had revolutionized the field by defying the conventions of subject matter and composition creating images in the rain and snow, for example, or of a pattern that the sea cut in the sand. Histories of photography traditionally focused on England, France and the United States. But Rosenblums major contribution, A World History of Photography (1984), provided a true global perspective. The book was translated into several languages and remains a standard text in the field. Her other major work, A History ... STEPHANE DE SAKUTIN / AFP. by Sabrina Imbler NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- If you were somehow able to travel back in time some 130,000 years and chance upon a Neanderthal, you might find yourself telling them about some of humanitys greatest inventions, such as spanakopita and TikTok. The Neanderthal would have no idea what you were saying, much less talking about, but they might be able to hear you perfectly, picking up on the voiceless consonants t, k and s that appear in many modern human languages. A team of scientists has reconstructed the outer and middle ear of Neanderthals and concluded that they listened to the world much like we do. Their study, published Monday in Nature Ecology & Evolution, found that Neanderthals had the anatomical ability to perceive a similar range of sounds as modern Homo sapiens, including upper speech frequencies that mainly involve consonant production. The authors believe this research has ... More | | Charles James, Satin Evening Dress, 1945. Additional versions of this dress are recorded on page 130 in The Genius of Charles James (Coleman, 1982). Alexander Berggruen exhibits new paintings and works on paper by Brittney Leeanne Williams | | Sims Reed Gallery opens an exhibition of new work by Eileen Cooper | | What do we want to keep? Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein reopens with exhibition of works from the collection | Brittney Leeanne Williams, Arch 21, 2020. Oil and pastel on panel. 14 x 11 in. Photo: Dario Lasagni. NEW YORK, NY.- Alexander Berggruen is presenting Brittney Leeanne Williams: The Arch Is a Portal Is a Belly Is a Back. This exhibition is running by appointment only at the gallery: 1018 Madison Ave., Fl. 3, New York, NY, 10075. The new paintings and works on paper by Brittney Leeanne Williams in this show take influence from desertscapes in Victorville, a city northeast of Los Angeles where Williams spent part of her childhood. Williams transforms these Southern Californian landscapes into emotional landscapes: representations of psychological states, memories, and emotional ties. In speaking about her omnipresent red figures folded posture, Williams noted: She bends in tiredness, she bends under the weight of heavy grief; she bends in negotiation for the ones she loves; she bends in prayer; she bends to pick up her baby; she bends to anchor herself to the ground; she bends in pleasure; she bends in caretaking; ... LONDON.- Sims Reed Gallery is presenting Nights at the Circus, an exhibition of new work by the celebrated British artist Eileen Cooper, opening on 4th March 2020. Comprised of twenty works on paper of unique collages, monoprints and a linocut, plus a new woodcut edition to be launched by the gallery, this is Coopers second show with Sims Reed. The presentation takes its title from Angela Carters seminal novel, Nights at the Circus, from which Cooper developed the featured works. Published in 1984, the book incorporates multiple categories of fiction, referencing fairy tales and weaving them into magical realism themes that frequently appear in Coopers work. The opportunity to visit Nights at the Circus arose with The Folio Society commissioning Cooper to create illustrations for a new edition of Carters novel. Revisiting the novel elicited deep connections ... More | | Pino Pascali, Ponte levatoio, 1968. Steel wool, plywood, 221 à 118 à 10 cm. Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz. VADUZ.- Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein starts its 2021 exhibition programme with a major collection display featuring numerous works that have never been on show before. We associate collecting with an ongoing activity, accumulating things over an extended period of time. This is the only way that a collection can come about. However, this continuous flow of a growing collection consists of many individual decisions which involve answering a variety of questions. Is this object of interest to me, who else may be interested in it?, Is this object meaningful, is it complex enough to retain its importance for a long time to come?, How are the aspects of relevance for me rendered in formal terms?, Does the object tie in with the context of the existing collection?. These are questions which need to be answered again and again. Whereas private collections are totally free in defining their collecting ... More |

The backdrop of the evolution of this space is provided by the large wallpapers reproducing photographic portraits of the MACRO, shot by Giovanna Silva in the storerooms of the museum. The project, titled Catabasi, brings to light the works stored in the off-limits spaces where they are conserved, granting them a new-found visibility and triggering reflections on the status of the artwork in an era in which it is increasingly mediated by images. Domestic visions to erotic trace to semi-abstract manifestations abound in the exhibit bearing an undeniable introspective pull. PRESENCE is an exhibit of artists braving the challenge of working related to the figure, whether from memory, photographs, or actual models, that nurtures our longing for direct social contact and a bygone normalcy we miss. More Sydney's Mardi Gras marches on despite virus venue change SYDNEY (AFP).- The gleaming pageantry of Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade couldn't be dulled by a Covid-forced venue change Saturday as marchers moved from the streets to a stadium. Revellers usually line the traditional parade route through the city's LGBT hub, but due to Covid-19 concerns, the event was held inside the Sydney Cricket Ground to an audience of 36,000. "It is such an amazing event weve had this year, to really be together, to fight what weve had, Dr Bushan Joshi, who marched with other frontline health workers. Joshi, one of the 5,000 parade participants, said it was amazing to see so many people together, safely celebrating at the SCG. The usually boisterous street parade was corralled inside the sports ground in an attempt to prevent the potential spread of Covid-19. But the tightly managed spectacle, filled ... More Reel excitement: New Yorkers return to movie theaters NEW YORK (AFP).- Movie enthusiast Cindy B was among the first in the door at the AMC Empire 25 off Times Square Friday as New York City's cinemas reopened a year after they were abruptly closed by coronavirus. The Big Apple's movie theaters resumed operations for the first time since March 17 last year, when officials ordered them shut as Covid-19 began ravaging America's commercial capital. Cindy arrived at 10 am, 30 minutes before the doors opened and a full hour before her film started ... More Israel holds concerts for vaccinated Tel Aviv residents TEL AVIV (AFP).- Hundreds of people vaccinated against Covid-19 packed a Tel Aviv football stadium Friday for the first of four concerts organised by the municipality, as Israel eases virus restrictions. The 500 fans wore masks and sat in the central section of the 30,000-seat capacity Bloomfield Stadium to attend a performance by Israeli pop star Ivri Lider. "This is really cool. I am so happy," said Reut Gofer, as she arrived at the venue. "I hope this is the beginning of a period when we will return to our normal life," she added. Israel in February began easing restrictions following a third lockdown, and has since gradually re-opened shopping malls, gyms, swimming pools, hotels and some cultural facilities. But in most cases, the return to normality has been reserved for people who have been fully vaccinated, under a so-called "green badge" scheme. ... More Bill C. Davis, who had a hit play with 'Mass Appeal,' dies at 69 NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Bill C. Davis was virtually unknown in theater circles and still in his 20s when he wrote Mass Appeal, a two-character comic drama in which a middle-aged Roman Catholic priest finds his complacency challenged by an outspoken young seminarian. A friend a priest, in fact sent the play to actress Geraldine Fitzgerald, who in turn took it to Lynne Meadow, the artistic director of the Manhattan Theater Club. Meadow, in a telephone interview, recalled first reading the play. I put it down and I had this feeling of lucidity, she said. It was crystal clear what ...
